Since we seem to always recommend the same towns/areas (i.e. Ridgewood, Montclair, Westwood, etc..etc..etc) I thought how about most overlooked towns? towns that are nice & have great schools but don't get the credit/rep they deserve.

Ok I'll start with Boonton Township. People think it's part of Boonton Town and has crappy schools but really it has excellent schools and the older kids go to Mountain Lakes HS.

Shamong and Tabernacle. To me, this is one of the very best areas in the entire state. I can't think of one disadvantage. Some might think the area is too rural, but for someone like myself, who enjoys more open spaces, this is my kind of place.
Honorable mention to Califon/High Bridge area. |

Beat me to it
![]() Great area, always something going on (soap box derby this saturday, Tour of High Bridge last Sunday was a thread here - and I didn't start it , etc ), schools are good, Voorhees HS made that recent list of top schools (not that it means anything specifically, as we've discussed to death here ), overall a great place to live imho. |

I agree with Mike on Shamong and Tabernacle. Before my husband and I moved out of NJ-we had considered moving to Shamong. We have a friend who built a log cabin out that way a while back and loves it as well.

for a town close to NYC, with I believe the lowest taxes in Essex County, Cedar Grove. Nice small town, yet close to everything.

the only "beating" glen ridge gets here is because of insane property taxes. otherwise, i don't think it's underrated on these boards at all.
