Summit v. Basking Ridge
We have lived in Summit for 4 years in a 2800 square foot cape cod style house. With 4 kids it's getting tight. We purchased our house for 850. We can now go up to 1.5. In Summit, that gets you another fixer upper on a busy street. As much as we love it here, we're thinking of Basking Ridge. We want a newer house, 4000+ square feet, good yard, space, great neighborhood. Are we nuts to want to move our family? Our kids are in elem school now. They're very settled. How do the two communities compare -- sports, recreational facilities, clubs (civic and sports), sense of community, etc. What are the reputations of the various subdivisions? Thanks for all of your help. We're torn.

Why not look at Chatham Township, I have shown homes there around that size (4000 SQFT) for less than 1.5 and they were stunning.
Not to dog Basking Ridge but it is getting a little far out there.

I have heard great things about Basking Ridge! As much as I love Summit, I completely understand where you are coming from. We just moved from Maplewood to PA, much bigger house, better schools, and less taxes!

if your really happy in Summit, I would tend to stay in Summit. I find Basking Ridge just as good but not as much action. Alittle more rural'/country type feel. I mean Summit has a lot to offer and if everyone is happy you can fix up a big 4000 square foot wreck over time. Location if your happy is very important!!! Try to get a great deal in Summit, take your time, market is still coming down and you love it there so why wreck a great thing.

For what it's worth, the OP was made back in June.
As yes, Basking Ridge is beautiful, and a lot less crowded and more affordable than Summit.

You know where we just sawC some really nice homes in that price range? A neighborhood near Basking Ridge called Canterbury Way-something like that.
We live in Short Hills but we moved here strictly because of our need to be near the city and airport. However, if my DH ever changes job's we'd probably move out to Basking Ridge again....

Canterbury Way is the main street running through the development, which is called Canterbury Estates. It was built by Toll Brothers in 2002. It's in Basking Ridge, off Mt. Airy Rd, about halfway between Routes 287 and 78. Here's a link to the two that are currently for sale in there.
