Default potential ideas for living in jersey

I work in fort lee, and i'm beginning a pre-emptive apartment hunt to get an idea of where i wanna move. I basically live in ny, and I'm realizing that between tolls, gas, etc etc. I'm actually spending more on my car that some people spend on apartments in parts of this country. So I'm trying to find something that works in Jersey for me, but I'm also 24 and want to be able to still have fun and not totally isolate myself. I'd like to be able to get to Manhattan to go out and stuff easily. Weehawken seemed like an interesting choice, but I'm still trying to learn more. I've visited parts of Jersey City, nicer than others, and Hoboken. All seem cool , but even living in ny my whole life its amazing how clueless I can be about New Jersey. I'd deal with a roomate if I have to but my ceiling is 1000$ a month for rent. Of course something safe, I don't want to fear for my life every day. Thanks guys.
