Temporary Lodging?
Hello,
I have previously made some general inquires here about rental properties in NE NJ and the feedback was invaluable. One thing I mentioned in passing was that my move back from Durham, NC to the NE NJ area is likely to be in (maybe) in August/September or thereabouts......
A lot of this is a function of winding up of things here in Durham, and landing myself within commuting distance of my new office in NYC. That said, Over the course of the summer, there is a very real need for me to be spending some blocks of time working in NYC. A week at a time possibly on and off, while I also try to finish packing, moving and winding things up on the NC end.
One option I have is to crash at my father's house in Bucks County PA..... unfortunately, that is an 80 mile commute, and even by bus, that is about $35 bucks a day plus 5ish hours travel time both ways.... undesirable at best.
Although the actual time in NYC working may be flexible, there is still a definite necessity to do a few blocks of it over the summer. A still unpleasant alternative would be a motel room off one of the highways for a week at a time during my northern sojourns. (and I don't have anyone in the city that I could stay with, ATM).
Anyway, am just looking for any suggestions, general or specific, as to what options I might avail myself of in terms of temporary lodging proximate to the city.... by the day, week month...? are there rentals available for those sort of terms? (I wouldn't need much, just a small place to crash and keep my car..... this is just so that I can get to the city for work for a few blocks of time while I manage my transition). That said, I imagine that something monthly would probably make doing my scouting, and home shopping trips a bit easier.... anyway, any ideas or suggestions are most welcome.

I'd look at the Extended Stay America type places, while technically a "hotel", I don't see what's different about that than staying in a rented furnished apartment or house. At least you'll get the sheets changed and the place cleaned for you...

great start
Thanks a bunch for the great feedback and prompt response....
I have found something on craigls list that looks very interesting. This is a place in Jersey City at the corner of Britton St. at Montgomery St.that rents rooms and suites.... seems to cater somewhat to music students from some alternative music school in NYC.... this sounds very nice for what I am looking for. Below is the Craigslist ad, the Student housing ad, and the yahoo and google maps site. Anyone have any feedback on this place? Heard of it? Any red flags on the area or neighborhood or anything else? or, on the other hand, anyone heard or know anything good about the place, the area, etc? any/all feedback apreciated.
Temporary/Extended Stay Jersey City Journal Square nr PATH to NYC
Student Housing
loc: Britton St. at Montgomery St. Jersey City NJ US - Google Maps
Yahoo! Maps, Driving Directions, and Traffic
Thanks again,

when I was living far and looking to buy a house in North Jersey I went to craigslist but looked under vacation rentals on Lake Hopatcong, or Greenwood Lake Area, or Lake areas of NJ and found several vacation rentals, cheaper than extended stay motels about 3,000 a month as compared to 800 a month or less. So do a search on vacation rental propert and ask for a month its cheaper and it worked out I found a guy who wanted to let me use his little vacation cabin on the Lake! Its like temporary housing but cheaper!! I also did a search on vacation rentals in NJ, and searched for NOrthern areas like Ringwood, Lake Hopat. I found a few sites not just craigslist!!

If you end up staying with your Dad in Bucks County, if it is lower Bucks County, near Trenton, you could actually take the Amtrak train and get to NYC really quickly (an hour or less). It's an easy, low-stress ride (I just recently took the train from Trenton NJ to Boston, and it was a breeze, and there were a few Manhattan stops.)
My next door neighbor (we are in lower Bucks County) commutes to Manhattan every day on the train, and swears by it.
If you end up staying at a hotel/efficiency like a Comfort Inn or Embassy Suites, keep your receipts and deduct it on your tax return as unreimbursed work expenses.
