There are trade offs with every economic decision. The Government is full of lawyers who have no clue what these tradeoffs are. They have no idea about the ecoonomic impact their legislation brings about. Until we get a government that understands the more its hand prints are on a capitalist economy the more harm will come about.
Asking for sound economic legislation to be passed in Trenton and Washington is like asking a Zoo keeper to design an oil refinery.

So what you are saying is people should have continued to work for $5.25 ph forever?? In NJ?? what is it now? $7.25??? In NJ??? That and the earnings of maybe 3 others will let you to afford to live here!!
And the "they could of went to college blah blah bla....." well if EVERYONE graduated college who would do the minimun wage jobs???
Minimum wage earners are not just the High school kids looking for summer employment of which it's out there you just have to look and go in person
If this person o/p is under 16 his hours are restricted and some employers don't want to deal with that.

I live in a state that has the federal minimum wage ($5.85). However, most places give more than that to adults (usually $9-$10.50), but because the wage is low, there are tons of jobs for teenagers here. It seems like every fast food restaurant has a sign out. My daughter (16) was offered two jobs before school even got out. Also, there is no "working papers" requirement for those under 18 either, so it's not much of a hassle to get a job.
She'll get an automatic raise July 24th when the federal rate goes up.

Get out there and apply personally.

You can't go to Home Depot directly and fill out an application, they will just refer you to their website. Snagajob works because the application usually goes directly to the hiring manager. Last year I when I was seeking a part time job I got a call directly from a hiring manager at Home Depot a day or two after I had applied through snagajob. I would recommend applying for retail jobs through craigslist as well. The market is rough but there are still jobs out there. My fiancee applied for a part time job as a receiving associate at Lord and Taylor through craigslist he was called in for an interview about a week later and was hired on the spot so there are jobs out there and he had no experience in receiving. The sad thing is the jobs are few and far between. Look in the newspaper apply at Walgreens since they are open 24/7, Pathmark, and pretty much any store that you can think of. Look in the local paper or online apply for receptionist, file clerk, or any office position that doesn't require a ton of experience.Good Luck

That sucks. I would suggest babysitting but too many weirdos and perverts are lurking around. It's funny because alot of the people I see working at these places are far from young high schoolers who need the minimum wage jobs. I see several middle aged and seniors moving slow and giving bad attitude (no offense to any older adults) at these jobs. My niece is 13 and her lazy mother had the nerve to tell her when she turns 14 she has to go out and get a job. I was working at 14 but I did it because I wanted to not because my mom made me. My niece saves every dime she gets and has to hide it from her mom because she will ask to "borrow" it and won't pay it back. Hopefully my mom's daycare will still be open so she can work there next summer. Otherwise it is looking quite bleek.

this is where you liberal types got it wrong, there is NO right to a high paying job. going to college while helpful does not guarantee a high wage job, the only thing that guarantees a high wage job is to get training or experienced with highly marketable skills that are in demand by employers.
the other person is correct, the high minimum wage is hurting the job prospects of kids looking for summer work.

Do you know any other sites that I could look for summer jobs.... I badly want to work, bored! I also went to couple of stores here and applied, still no answer back.

I went to GSP on Monday and I saw a hiring ad at Johnny Rockets! I suggest you call them fast. Paramus is also very close from where you live.

applying online
Hi NorthNJ,
When you apply online to places like home depot or lowes, you have to follow up your application with an in person appearance. I have a relative that works at home depot and he said they get about 50 or so applications a day sometimes. The only ones that get called are the ones on top of the pile when they call people for interviews. He had to literally go to the store and then play telephone tag with the guy who was in charge of hiring. He got the job because he did not give up on getting an interview. This sounds like you would be a pest, but this is how they work. He said most of the guys he knows that work there, had to do the same thing.
So perhaps a face to face meeting would be a good idea!
