We are in the process of buying in West Orange...on Gregory Avenue (Northfield would be the closest major cross street but it's a few blocks away). I go to work early enough to use the jitney to the South Orange train station but probably won't be able to catch the train back home from New York until about 8. I would prefer not to take the Port Authority bus if I can avoid it. What are my options from the South Orange train station (or any neighboring stations) to get me home when the jitneys stop running?
Wow so no local bus service or anything. I feel like taxis everyday would add up. Are there any nearby stations I can drive to and park? I was also thinking about going to the Highland Avenue station and walking home (it's slightly under a mile and I like to walk) but it just didn't look too safe in the areas down the hill. Thoughts?
During the summer when it is light out it would definately not be a problem. While that section of Orange and West Orange is certainly not affluent it doesn't neccesarily make it dangerous. However, my suggestion would be to get a parking pass for Orange Station and leave your car there. If they don't have any passes there are always daily spots but you have to get there early. The reason I would suggest Orange rather than Highland is that almost every train stops at Orange and only some of the trains stop at Highland. The two stations are only a mile apart. Good Luck.
