marc777, one friend i have whose kids go to public school in franklin does not worry too much about it... she thinks her kids are smart enough to handle any situation and her belief is that if you bring them up good, they will be fine... my other friends placed their kids in private catholic schools to 'play it safe'... again, different views...
anyway, AnthonyB, i have to thank you for recommending Somerset Presbyterian Nursery school for my boy who's entering pre-school... we went there last weekend and he got the last spot for the morning class... whew!!! we visited the school and the director/teacher was really nice... again, many thanks!!! =) i did try some others but they were mainly day care centers, and that is not what i'm looking for... so thanks again!
will be checking out the website you mentioned...

The last few murders/shootings that took place in FTWP had recent Franklin High grads involved.
Drive through the town...not just the "good side". Drive through the projects on a hot summer afternoon and take a look for yourself. Those kids will sit next to yours in school...and it's not the kids...it's the parents who are too drunk, too ignorant, too pregnant (for the 10th time) too high, too in jail, etc. I don't need to go further.
I live in FTWP, pay ridiculous taxes and send my kids to private. A lot of us do. There is a waiting list for the local private school...for a reason.
I'd try No. Brunswick, So. Brunswick, Washington TWP (Warren Cty) before Franklin Twp.
Best of Luck.

AND we went to basketball games there and had to be searched at the table with the metal detectors and all equipment that appears to be a way of life.
I think all elementary schools are good. Parents tend to be more involved when their kids are younger and let go a little more when they hit middle school (big mistake).
Try other towns in Somerset County, you will find others much better and you can get a house with your own yard, etc.
Good luck to you.

And that's NO KIDDING at all!
Playing it safe? I don't believe that's what it is....better education and less harrassment while trying to walk down a hallway, go to the bathroom or learn in a classroom.
My kids go to private for the same reasons I did. Education is all about education. Bullys have no foot hold in private schools (unless their parents put a new wing on the library, gym, cafeteria, etc.)
There's trouble no matter where you send your kids...private included...it just comes down to the amount of trouble and distractions you want your kids to go through while getting an education in their formative years.
Some kids fly through unscathed (ftwp schools) others don't.

I can rattle of multiple towns adjacent to Franklin that are better. There's gotta be payola involved in this.

Just an FYI--
I do not reside in the challenging part of the Franklin Township however, my children are gifted students that are performing exceptionally well in the district. My husband and I could have selected to send all three of our children to private schools, however felt that a public school education will offer them opportunities that private schools do not.
Having graduated from Ivy League and top universities, we want the best for our children including a safe environment. However, when evaluating a school system, people need to understand that cultural and economic diversity does not represent an unsafe environment. Additionally, the rumors of this murder and that murder most stop. South Brunswick, West Windsor, and Princeton School Districts all have their challenges including gangs, drugs, and sexual activity.

I agree, franklin township is fine, safe, etc. judging it based on the one small area of town near new brunswick isn't representative. the grammer schools are second to none and those students will eventually make their way up to the high school, which will gradually continue to improve over time.

I'm not sure what gifted and talented classes/status really means in a school system (Franklin Twp) that under-performs over and over again.

West Windsor definitely has drugs and sexual activity (like 100% of districts in the USA). But no gangs as of yet and inshallah none ever.

I don't believe anyone, until you, has said anything about cultural and economic diversity. I can't stand when people pull this. Let's throw out the diversity card. It has no bearing on this thread whatsoever.
Furthermore, the "rumors" are facts and won't stop until the murders, yes I said it, murders stop. It IS an unsafe environment, when you have security checkpoints to enter a school, that's usually a clue and means they have reason to check for weapons, etc. Ok, the school may be safer because of the checkpoints, but what about the parking lot, athletic fields, etc. No thank you.
Also, I think those that wrote about Franklin being one of the top places to live have never been there or as someone else has said, someone's being paid. Maybe to shine a better light on the town, who knows.
