Default Excellent Idea!!!

My neighbors were telling me the other day that they are both petitioning their employers to allow them to work 4 ten hour days vs. 5 eight hour days. The wife has been successful in convincing her employer (fortune 500 company) to allow her to do this. Hubby is still working on it (Government Job) : ) I think other big corporations should consider this as well. Imagine the impact on fuel and energy savings this will have on both the employee and employer...less traffic on the highways - less gas consumed..less electric used by these huge corporate offices if the computers aren't running and the lights are out. And not to mention that if people have an extra day off, most will do a little extra shopping which means more money going into the economy. This is a brilliant idea! I think the rest of us should follow their lead and ask their employers to do the same.

I heard on the news here in OK that some companies here are giving their employees the option to work 4 10 hour days. I also think it's a great idea. It would also cut day care costs for working parents, especially if they could have different days off.

This is commonly done on the west coast, i.e. CA, AZ.

I'd like to see Government do the same. Thsi was popular a few years back but I think it faded quickly. But now, with the economy in the state that it's in.... this is a great solution. And an extra day with the kids... even better! Quality plus quantity time!

I do a staggered work schedule in New Mexico. We have 9 work days every two weeks. Every other Friday is off, which = an extra 5 weeks of off time per year.

Doesn't hurt to ask...if the economy was is better shape, I can see an employer bulking. But if you appraoch them with the fact that this will save them thousands...I bet the response will be - "Great Idea Kate - when was your last raise?"

Whereas I would expect the response to be, you'll work a ten hour day? OK let's have 5 of them a week.

I know it's not feasible for "all" businesses to shut down completely for a day. But a company like yours, maybe they can allow for groupings to take alternate days off? worth a shot ; )
