Default Moving - Pods

Has anyone used the PODS for moving? we are potentially closing on our house (sale) on a Wednesday and buying on Thursday -- no clue how to handle the fact that the house has to be vacant - but we cant move into the new place til Thursday! Any ideas?

Are you using a moving company? They can store your things. If not, POD can store them for you (assuming you're doing the move yourself.) Good luck with your move!

The PODS are great! They drop them...you keep them as long as you need to..and when ready, they pick them up and move them to the new house : ) Or..you load them and they can store them in their warehouse until your ready to move into the new place...great setup!

Check out ABF U-Pack, when I priced a move from NJ to NM they were much less $$$ than PODS for the same type containerized service. They'll also give you the option of having an empty 28' trailer dropped in front of your house. You use as much as you need and then install the bulkhead they supply to separate your goods fromthe rest of the trailer, you're charged by the number of feet you use.

For a one-day deal like that, the PODS may be a PITA- you'll have to schedule the pickups and deliveries pretty tightly. If you can fit everything in a 26' Uhaul (or Ryder, Penske, whatever), it'd be easier and cheaper to just rent that for a few days and leave everything locked in the truck overnight.

Default We're using PODS

We're using PODS - they will be here next week to pack up our home. The pricing was competetive with the traditional system, but we liked the fact that with PODS they don't unload and load our items (since we're in storage for several weeks) Loaded once, and we keep the key. And they are stored in an temperature controlled warehouse.

What's different about PODS is they charge by the space, not weight. So they aren't as incented (as a traditional mover) to pack you with maximum efficiency, because if more space is required, the customer foots the bill for the additional POD.

So, it was recommended that we pay close attention to how things are packed into the POD, and how they pack our breakables, so we can addres any concerns we might have.

This is what I would think. If you're moving it yourself, an extra day rental on a uhaul will probably cost less (and be less of a hassle).

I have a question..why didn't your attorney arrange to have back to back closings???? That's what I did... of course moving into a vacant new construction probably made it a little more feasible. You could have jumped from one closing to the other...just curious.

Very hard to close on (and move out of/into) 2 houses in one day.

What we did the Tuesday after Memorial weekend.

Movers came 1st thing Tuesday morning. We had everything ready, all furniture emptied (they say you can leave clothes in dressers) beds taken apart. Most of the stuff we moved into the front room so it was less steps/time for them. The buyer walked through at 10:30, movers were almost done. Closing was 11. Hubby left for closing while I stayed with movers, by the time they needed me, movers were done.

Closing took about an hour, we then drove to our next walk through/closing. Walk through was at 2, closing at 4. By the time we were done with the 2nd closing, it was too late in the day for the movers, meaning we'd be charged time and a 1/2. We paid the $100 for over night storage. Hubby & I went to the new house and unloaded the coolers with food then drove to the hotel. Next morning movers were there by 8:30, then we had Comcast, phone and who ever else had to stop by to turn the utilities over.

Had we not moved on the Tuesday following the holiday, we would have done Wednesday, movers would have cleaned us out 1st thing Tuesday morning, then we might have adjusted the closing times for the 2 houses to be able to unload the same day.

What part of NJ will you be selling/buying in?
Do you really want to load/unload your own stuff?
We decided not to, normally we might but it was too hectic.

We used the PODS, and the largest one they have claims to hold the contents of a 1500sq foot house. This is not true, though the Pods was great and convient for us it did not hold no where near what we had. We packed that Pod so tight, there was not one inch of space we did not use. We got in 1 dining room set 6 chairs with China cabinet, 1 queen size bedroom set with triple dresser and armoire, 2 night tables, another small dresser, lots of boxes, lawn mower. etc.

We did not bring any living room furniture, no kids bedroom sets, it simply would not fit. I believe 2 of the largest Pods would have done the job. We moved from NJ to NC. BTW, we sold the furniture that wouldn't fit at a yard sale.
