I have been looking throughout north and central new jersey for the location that offers single family houses in the 300-400 range, very close to train stations offering commutes of 45 minutes or less to NY Penn and where I won't be mugged on the way to or from the station. I have looked in Metuchen, which has some (very little) housing at this range but the properties are not near (walking distance) to the train station. I've looked in Maplewood and West Orange and South Orange. Maplewood houses in this range are in sketchy neighborhoods and the Oranges were far from the train. Looked in Bloomfield, but we really want train service and from what I gather the nicer parts of Bloomfield are serviced by buses not trains. The next area will probably be Rutherford and Lyndhurst, but again there doesn't seem to be much housing in this range. My wife and are coming from Brooklyn and are thinking this all may be a pipe dream. We have zero interest in moving out the hinterlands of New Jersey or going as far as Hazlet/Matawan. Any suggestions on houses in our range or is it North Carolina for us?

Bloomfield just added a commuter shuttle service in the north end to the train station. It starts on West Passaic Ave and travels south along Broad St. You may be able to find a house in your range off (or on) those 2 streets. If you have more questions about it, I'll try to help you.

Look in Woodbridge. You can look in Woodbridge proper for properties near the Woodbridge Station, in the Avenel section for properties near the Avenel station, or in the Iselin section near Metropark. You won't find a palace in that price range, but you can find some decent older homes that may work for you, and all of the areas near the train stations are pretty safe.

You should be able to identify some properties in the higher end of your stated range in Rutherford. It's a great town - bus and train run through, and you would feel safe walking. Good luck!

Try Somerset County. Seriously, you will find homes definitely in your price range that are safe and within a 5 mile commute to train stations with free parking that you will not get mugged at. Give it a shot.
