I am buying a home in Manalapan, New Jersey but need to commute to Philadelphia. I see that it takes 1 hour and 25 minutes by car. I was hoping that there was a way to take public transportation. I learned that the old academy bus line that used to offer limited service is no longer avaialable so i checked for trains.

I was happy to learn that there is a high speed Amtrack train that runs only 27 minutes from Trenton to Philadelphia (expensive however $600 a month) and the ride by car from Manalapan to Trenton looks like 44 miles and my GPS says 30 minutes.

This looks like it might work. Does anyone do this commute ? Is there a better way ?

Thanks

I don't know about buses but your best option is to drive to Woodcrest train station on the Patco line and take the train to center city. 20 minutes. Drivetime to Woodcrest off 295 might be an hour but it is worth it to me.

Instead of taking Amtrak from Trenton, how about the SEPTA train. The R7 Regional Rail follows the same route as Amtrak, you'll just have several stops in Bucks County and NE Philly. It will take about twice as long with less than half the cost ($181 for a monthly pass). Check out septa.org .

If I'm not mistaken, parking at the Trenton station is next to impossible to find- that may be the one sticking point in your plan.

I'll take your word for that, Bob. Would Princeton Junction be any better?

looks like you're closest to princeton junction for a railway. I've taken the Septa R7 and all i have to say is... slow. It stops at every stop around northern phila area and will take about 45-50min from Trenton to the Market East stop. Also bring cash because you can't buy septa tickets in jersey, only at certain stations you can. i've had the embarrassment of getting a free ride from the conductor because i had no cash on me and could not buy a septa ticket at the Trenton station. As for Princeton Junction to Trenton it's probably a 15-20 min ride depending on whether you get on the express train or not.
Also another note... the trains never meet on time like the schedule and i've definitely missed the R7 because njtransit got there 1 min too late AND vice versa.

Like I said before, Patco is 20 minutes to 8th/Market, it is cheap ($150/month) reliable and quick. Plus it runs every 6-8 minutes or so during peak times. Septa is a total mess.

This sounds great but its 56 minutes from Manalapan to the Woodcrest Patco station. The total trip in a car is only 1 hour 23 minutes so why drive an hour you might as well go all the way at that point and drive into philly. (However i will look into this) especially since I assume I could park my car at the PATCO station. I dont understand what this saves you though. You still spend the gas one hour each way and then pay another $150 a month for a train that takes you 20 minutes into Philly. I wanted a short ride to some kind of hub that will take me in. I dont care if the commute is a bit longer I just dont want to be the one driving. let the conductor or bus driver do the hard work. (grin)

The Princton Junction station is 23.6 miles and 35 minutes. That sounds kewl. Can I take the Prinction Junction train into the Philly (Market and 19th) is the area I would be working.

The Manalapan drive to Trenton and is indicated as 34.9 miles and 50 minutes and then the Express Amtrak train is 27 minutes to Philly but its $600 dollars a month and I dont know where in Philly it ends up.

Cant believe there appears to be no easy way to do this commute but I love Manalapan and dont want to live in Philly I would love to be in the middle between Philly and NYC - That is why I love Manalapan but come on add a rail service already.

Grrrrrrrrrrrr Freehold/Marlboro/Manalapan need to expand the Freehold line and add commuter service. Come on now its been over 15 years now.

Quick follow-up. Princeton Junction, NJ (PJC) / Philadelphia - 30th Street Station, PA (PHL) is ($630) a month but what is nice is the drive from Manalapan is 23.6 mi about 38 mins

This sounds nice although a bit pricey.
