HI we have friends moving from CA and asked if I knew what the morning commute was like from Chester to Madison. I am not so familiar with Morris County! Anyone have any idea?

Wiley, I beg to differ. That commute would be very, very snarly. The problem with Madison is that it is too far removed from the improved section of 24 where it starts at I-287 to make getting to it worthwhile. Therefore, it's a straight shot down 24 and through Morristown, which is really tough, and then again through Convent Station. Also, coming home, 24 west of Morristown fills up. You can count on averaging about 30 mph at best on this commute.

OK..then take the sneaky backroads through Randolph..hop on Rt. 10 - hit 287 South and jump on the new 24???

Are we talking about Dover-Chester Road to Calais Road then Sussex Tpke to Hanover Ave? That's a horrible alternative. I used to live in that area. Rt 10 east is a parking lot in the morning, and last I knew, the merge at Sussex and Hanover there was no traffic light, and both of those roads are backed up a mile + at evening rush hour.

Actually..Rt. 10 hasn't been that bad lately - better than 80 is you can believe that! Another route...206 south to 202 or stay on 206 and hit 287 north to 24 : ))) I know them all Mike.

i generally agree - it's not "horrible" as in "don't move to chester horrible", but slow given how close in proximity those 2 towns are. average 30mph for the trip is spot on, and the sting is taken out somewhat because it's such a pretty ride.
given the folks are coming from CA, odds are this commute will be cake though.
You also have to consider the tons of Menham Twp. school buses on Rt. 24 in the am. Depending on what time you are traveling, that can double your commute time.
Chester to Madison is 45 minutes unless you leave very early.
Translation...easy commute by NJ standards : )
