My wife and I are both working in the city (NYC) and currently renting. Would anyone have any good suggestions for places where we could buy a home?
Some of our requirements:
- looking for a 2Br+/2Bath condo/townhome
- range 400K - 600K
- should be easy commute (within an hour) to Wall Street / World Financial Center
- possible tax deductions if new home?
- we don't have kids so schools are not the most important criterion but community should be decent with good neighborhood
- current lease till end of yr so looking to buy in 8-10 months
- should be upcoming area, planning on being in this home for around 3-4 years atleast
Btw is it a good time to buy a home in this area? Currently we are renting in Port Imperial area paying around 3K including rent, utilities and commute to NYC. Any suggestions welcome... Thanks,
Possible option is the Plauderville section of Garfield (in Bergen County). New condos/townhomes build in walking distance to the Plauderville station (NJT Bergen Co. Line) on Midland Avenue. 1/2 hr. train ride into Hoboken, change to PATH or Ferry for WFD/WTC. Check it out.
For a little more upscale look at Rutherford/East Rutherford (NJT Bergen Co. Line) they have new condos/townhomes too.
Spincycle thanks for the information. Would you be having an idea on the tax situation in bergen county? I heard that in West New York tax is around 2%. Is this the same throughout NJ or does it vary? Also do some condos give tax waiver if you are a first time home buyer?
I think Lodi or Garfield, Preferably Lodi... Very nice little homes and town homes... Theres lots of multi family homes also if you would want tenants. Affordable there also, unlike most of bergen County.
Also Secaucus would be Great. Its nice there and it has great transportation to NYC.

Just watch out for parts that flood. No NJT train in Lodi, but depending where you live in Lodi you can easily drive into Garfield/Plauderville for train.
In that price range I'd consider Montclair, specifically, the Siena. New building, great area with lots to do. Montclair has bus and train service to NYC.
There are a LOT of areas in that price range. I think your commute from Madiston, Chatham etc would be over an hour. I personally would look at some NJ Transit train schedules to see the various towns etc. I am a rail person not a bus rider.
I live in Hackensack, you can get a 2 BDDR for well under that range, but I wouldn't invest in the town. Lodi/Garfield, not great towns, but that is my opinion, I wouldn't buy there. Did you think about Weehawken?
