I am looking for *SAFE* housing for my 21 year old daughter near Kean University in Union. She found a private dormitory in Newark called University Centre. She would need to commute to Kean via NJ Transit from, I assume, the Norfolk St. station. Is anyone familiar with University Centre and/or this area and is the walk from University Centre to the rail station a dangerous one? Some of her classes are in the evening, so she would be regularly walking home from the station after dark. Any information would be greatly appreciated!! Also, if anyone is familiar with the off-campus housing options within walking distance of Kean University, I would welcome any advice.

I worked for the company that built University Centre- it's a great place in an OK area of Newark, but not one I'd spend too much time walking around- especially at night. The subway station is only a block away at Washington and Lock Street, which would take her to Penn Station Newark (a five minute ride). From there she'd take the Raritan Valley line to the station right across the street from Kean.

NJIT (which is directly across the street from University Centre) has patrols/escorts at night, but I don't know that they'll be readily available, nor are they normally for non-NJIT students (the escorts, I mean).

I would not consider it safe for her. What about a dorm at Kean? There's probably off campus housing as well.

I am very concerned about safety as well. She is on a waiting list for housing at Kean. Kean eliminated the alternative housing (at one of the major hotels at Newark Airport) so the on-campus housing is limited.

That's too bad. What about renting a studio apt in the area? Can she find a roommate? Sometimes students advertise for them. I graduated from Kean, but that was a long time ago, so I'm not familiar with the area any more. Good luck to you.

I helped some students from Kean to rent a house last year in the Elmora section of Elizabeth. There are some great homes available, if some of the students want to rent together, they would be saving some money.

That's a great idea. Wish I knew you when I was at Kean.

I graduated from Kean as well... and the area is not the greatest that's for sure. The commute from Newark to Union at night would NOT be a good idea in my opinion. Even the on-campus dorms aren't the safest but then again I'm sure it's like that in most colleges. I would find her an apt in a nearby safer town with a few of her friends. Clark, Westfield, Colonia, Kennilworth, etc.

hi...i am looking for a roommate. i am a junior at kean uiniversity so i know how the housing thing goes. last year i had to get an apt off campus due to the lack of housing and in my first semester i was placed at the hilton hotel so believe me i know how it is... with that being said i am looking for a roommate in the elizabeth area. the apt is about 1.5 miles away from kean(any closer and your would pay an arm and leg). the block is short and is a dead end so not alot of traffic comes down the blcok. i happen to be from bergern county so safety was major for me too. the landlord of this building is the landlord of my soon to be old apt so they are very flexible and willing to help. if you are interested feel free to contact me at boo2stink@yahoo.com or call me at 551-587-1654...

I recommend not to live in Newark and commute to Elizabeth.. Elizabeth is safer and you can find good studios at reasonable prices.. do a search in Craigslist.org.. there are many Kean students living in Elizabeth.. I graduated from Kean! :-)
