Default Information on Dumont NJ

Hi -
I am new to this forum. I am in the market for a house. I came across some listings for Dumont NJ and was wondering if you all could give me some info on the area. Is it a safe area? Are the schools decent? Both my husband and I work in Manhattan is there a train station nearby? How long is the commute? Any advice and info would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks!

Default Dumont NJ

Dumont is a quiet suburban neighborhood in Bergen County New Jersey near Haworth, Cresskill, Bergenfield and New Milford (not to be confused with West Milford which is in Sussex County).

There are about I believe 15,000 people, but I am not sure on the town population. The town is nice, ther aren't a ton of strip malls and highways running through the area, yet it is close to NYC and NYS. To get to the Tappan Zee Bridge is about 35 minutes...if you need to commute to Westchester or Yonkers.

Dumont has a good school system...its gotten busier than years ago, but its not busy like Paramus (its a nice town), which has many major highways and some malls within town limits. Commuting around northern New Jersey can be kind of slow during busy hours. Just give yourself extra commuting time because of traffic.

Dumont has a very suburban feel. There are small stores but if you need to get to the larger malls arewithin a short drive. There is a mall in Hackensack, several in Paramus, and the Palisades Mall in New York is 40 minutes away off of Rte 303. Other big stores such as Home Depot (Hackensack) and Lowes (Orangeburg, NY) are not far away. I think that one of those Price club type stores is also in Hackensack (its more urban than Dumont).

What is nice is the neighboorhood is not super congested and its safe enough to walk around at night. My opinion

Dumont is a really lovely town, reasonable commute to NYC, schools that are good, and they have done well by friends who either needed special education or encouragement for high achieving students. Doesn't have the reputation of neighboring Tenafly or Cresskill, but it is a nice place to live - and comparitively affordable.
