New Jersey or New York?
Hi, I am trying to decide whether to move to New York or New Jersey. I am moving up with my boyfriend from Florida for a job that will be in NYC and I have heard that New Jersey could possibly be the better move. I am a student so I don't have much for rent and I will be commuting for work almost everyday. I might have my car but it will not be my way of transportation. I was looking into different parts of Brooklyn, Astoria, as well as West New York, Hoboken, North Bergen, and Fort Lee. I am a female and I don't want to have to worry to walk home at night. PLEASE GIVE ME FEEDBACK!!

Overall, I think you'll get more for your $ in Jersey - but it isn't exactly cheap here either... like others have said... give more details of what you are looking for (type of apt, 1br, 2 br, studio ok?) and your budget and that will help us help you.

Well we'll be living together so we're searching for either a studio or a one bed room. We're looking around the range of $1000 but really no more expensive. I'm still in the search of my internship but it is most likely to be somewhere in Midtown Manhattan. I know that's not too specific but it's really all I have to work with right now. Thanks for your input!

Hi Corey,
I think your budget will gravitate you more towards NJ rather than NY. Look into Montclair, Bloomfield, East Rutherford, Bayonne for studios within your price range. Literally search these towns in that order. Just as personal opinion I recommend you START with these due to easy access to NYC on NJTransit. By no means is this a definitive list.
Try craigslist.org also, you will get a better idea for what studio apartments are going for.
Good luck!

Based on that budget look in Jersey - if you could afford anything in NY it is not likely to be a safe area.
What are you looking for in terms of community ... just a quite little burb ok w/ you or do you want more night life within walking/short drive distance?

You'll be ok, all those neighborhoods you mentioned are fine. West NY and N Bergen have parts that aren't so fine some that are. you mentioned Hoboken, Hoboken is amazing!

New York - Commute is much much easier than anywhere in Jersey. Just hop on subways. When dealing with NJ, take the bus to the path to the subway..blah blah..you get the point. Queens and Brooklyn are good choices.

You may save time on the commute, but if the person has a car for personal use then theres the issue of finding a legal parking spot after work for the next day for alt side street cleaning in some of the areas of brooklyn and queens that can be very time consuming.
