I have used Priceline with great results at major airports but just yesterday I found I couldn't get any agency to accept even $45 for a compact at Newark. I had found some great deals in the past at Newark. I tried Hotwire and I was able to lock in a deal at $45

Last month I was in Seattle and was able to get a compact for $13 a day in the airport.

I think some rental car prices are high because of the dates you're using. Like if you are coming in on a weekend instead of a weekday, that will garner a higher cost.

Its amazing after 4 years, nothing has changed.
Try Advantage rent-a-car located at the Windham Hotel right outside EWR (5 minutes - Google location). Take free Windham hotel shuttle. Prices are 1/3 of airport prices. I just booked $45/day for a full size.

to hillside you can look through NJtransit.com to see if there is a bus that will get you close enough to walk but the easiest option would be to get a taxi. Prob cost about $25.

Evil Google maps gives you 4 public transit options to do that. It would involve taking a bus to Newark or Elizabeth then another to Hillside. Or one partial train option.
On the attached list I would NOT take the first option because its a transfer in a part of town that's not the center of town.

IF this is the place you are thinking of, first of all there is a major difference in rates at EWR vs. the local nearby rental sites for the same company or franchise, like $95/day and up at EWR vs. $28 and up at Elizabeth or Hillside, AND there web site says "We'll Pick You Up".

If they offer pickup service from the airport then problem solved.

At these rate differences its worth a cab ride also.

This might be helpful in the future... my uncle was a pilot for an airline and when he came to NJ he would go to Philadelphia because rental cars were generally cheaper outside the New York Market. We were in Pt Pleasant Beach so Newark was a little closer... But Philly is not much farther and the rates were much less. If you are going to the Shore, NW New Jersey or Central NJ... consider using PHL... not that much farther than EWR
