I realize that this is not traditional diner fare, but the Broadway Diner in Bayonne (still 1960s decor) makes THE BEST baked French onion soup in a crock -- lots of melted cheese and a cap of light puff pastry. With the cooler weather settling in, you'll want to try it.
Plus -- those familiar with Jersey City probably know the VIP diner on Kennedy Boulevard. Their food had really declined, but then the "Sopranos" filmed a few scenes there awhile back -- and the food miraculously improved 1000%! No change in the decor, but the food is quite good, the portions large, and the prices reasonable for being so close to NYC.

I had great buffalo wings and fries at the Red Oak diner in Fort Lee. Really crispy.

Mustache Bill's is pretty much the most famous diner in the state now after it won that prestigious award earlier this year. I live about 10 minutes away from it and have never been there, and this summer every time I passed it there was literally a line stretching down the block. Why, I don't really know, but now that the crowds are gone I'll probably try it.

Although it could use updating, I like The Heritage in Hackensack...not the best, but pretty good.
The Suburban in Paramus is not bad.
I like the Tick Tock a lot and it probably is one of the better ones, but it is pricey and always packed.
I tried the Nutley Diner and i liked that, although I think it's pricey too.
I went to one in Chester last year, it may have even been "the Chester Diner" but I don't remember the name - anyway - I liked that a lot.
I miss the Clairmont in Clifton!
I do like the Coach House in Union City. Growing up a Jersey City girl, that's just sort of my touchstone!
You know what's gotten better, The Meadowlands Diner in Carlstadt/E. Rutherford. I was pleasantly surprised recently DESPITE it's garish exterior.
Does anyone know if the Flemington Diner still exists? I used to love that one too!
Oh, Oh, Oh.... what is the one right off of 78 in Clinton - with the Train car... I LOVE that place. LOVE LOVE LOVE it. That's my favotire! LOL I go every time we drive out that way.

The Tick Tock and Meadowlands Diners are both on the top of my list.
I also really like the Saddle Brook Diner. They have a huge menu and tons of great dishes. They can be on the expensive side though
I also love visiting family and hitting up the Butler Family Diner.
They have the best Breakfasts! The Stuffed Burgers and Cheese Steaks are also out of this world. I wish I lived closer. I would eat there every day.

Top's Diner in East Newark (which is next to Harrison, not to be confused with the East Ward of the City of Newark)...

The Bendix diner is a classic and I love going there for a Taylor Ham, Egg, and Cheese w/ a side of hash ("burn it" - well done) - it is a slice of heaven on a greasy spoon!
It's also historic, as it was where they filmed the Bounty commercials with Rosie - "The quicker-picker-upper!" I believe there is more historic significance but it doesn't come to mind right now.
I go there late at night, usually after partying in the city, as it's on my way home, and usually there is a guy there named "Johnny" who is blind. He is amazing, he knows where everything is and he gets around no problem, and he's one of the better servers I've had in any diner. I don't know how their other food is, but they seem to have a crowd of regulars that likes it, and a lot of truckers do stop here, too.
