Hardly anyone feels safe with their job right now, and the lower rent in UC will make living a bit more sustainable and maintainable if they loose their job. This also applies to the more undeveloped areas of JC.

But, rents are falling in gentrified areas as we speak.

I am betting on UC. Hoboken and JC are way overpriced. I just signed a deal on a unit in the Altessa. For the size, view, amenities and commute, I would have paid well over double in JC or Hoboken. Is UC a yuppy haven with a starbucks every 5 feet? No. Is it a good enough area that seems to be growing, has a government that wants to improve the area by offering tax abatement, and has affordable, luxury housing? Yes.
With any area that is up and coming, the early people are the one's who reap the most rewards. 15 years ago you could have bought into Hoboken or JC and tripled or more your money. I think UC is the same. The commute to NYC is great. As more profesionals like me and my GF move in, we will want more services and that means more upscale businesses.
I didn't buy here to be able to commute to Hoboken for fun. I bought here so that I can make a home here. I will not travel for dinner at a trendy restaurant. I will, however, frequent my local joint and help make it into a trendy place. I personally plan on looking for business opportunities in the area I bought in. I am thinking coffee shop, ecco-dry cleaner or daycare, but the possibilities are endless. It is a canvas on which we will write the future success of the city.

That's the spirit. More power to you. This is what UC needs more of.

Let me know when you're ready Millsan, Ive been thinking and keeping an eye out for business opportunities in the area or UC in general. Lets start a UC revolution!
Also I saw you mention government, and Mayor Stack seems like he is really about developing UC, and is very approachable. Glad to have him on board.

union city nj....the right time, right now
I'm a realtor/resident in Union City and believe me it gets better and better everyday that passes. All the parks are getting a facelift aswell as streets and sidewalks repaved. Its the best value for your dollar anywhere with in 3 miles of NYC. Luxury condos are going up all over the the city....with one that truely stands out. ALTESSA on 22nd street. www.altessanj.com its loaded with every amendtity you could want at a price that you can afford. From the rooftop pool you can see as far as your eyes will allow in every direction. If you are looking for a place to call home and a solid investment Altessa, Union City is the right time, right now.

Thanks goon and now. I am totally pumped for this. Just saw in another thread that there may be a rooftop tour when the roof is done and that might be in a month. I am bringing the hibachi and beer.

I looked at the Thread, a nice 2 br corner unit, the view was unreal but the noise from the traffic was unbearable. Plus the "gym" was almost nonexistent. I went twice and was very hesitant. Even though the commute was 10 minutes, it didn't make up for the location. Lincoln Tunnel traffic never dies down. Then I happened upon the Altessa. HOLY COW! the views are as good as the Thread, it's higher, it's quieter, it will have a real gym, commuting is 15 minutes longer, but hey, it's worth it for what you're getting. after my first viewing I put money down. All I have to say is rooftop pool on the 16th floor and a jogging track... the prices are lower than the Thread for 1 bedrooms and it's VERY well priced. All in all it was a no brainer.

Sales are supposed to start in January, with prices starting at $310,000. Anyone know anything about it?

union city will never be hoboken, you could have park avenue but even that will take years if not decades...union city is full of illegals and its only getting worse...i'd rather live next to yuppies than the people who've moved into UC in the past 10 years...

and the same could be said for Long Island City 10 years ago, JC 15 years ago, Hoboken 15 years ago, and the list goes on. Try some positivity, works wonders.
