Hey there. Recently I have been getting into shooting at Thunder Mountain in Ringwood. I was wondering what you need to buy a shotgun in NJ?

I am going to see what they have in Ramsey Outdoor or maybe Davis Sports shop in Sloatsburg NY because I live near them and they are where I get sports and camp equipment.

But I have some questions

1. What do I need if I wanted to buy a shotgun in NJ from a store?

2. What do I need to do if I wanted to buy a gun from a store in NY? (I live on the border of NY).

3. If neither of the places I know of have what I need, what is the protocol about ordering from an online store?

Thanks a lot.

Looks like they've changed the shotgun laws- you used to be able to buy one with just a drivers license. I guess Nanny NJ decided that wasn't protecting enough people from themselves........

Partially true....you can get away with just a number in the back window of your pick up...no shirt actually required.

Go to your local police dept and ask them for a "State of NJ Firearms Purchase ID Card".

After receiving your completed paperwork, they'll run a backround check on you. When that's done, they'll notify you to come in and get fingerprinted.

This ID card will allow you to purchase rifles, shotguns and ammunition.

If you choose to purchase a handgun, that's a separate application for a maximum of two per.

Either way, you must have the initial firearm purchaser's ID card.

Happy shooting.

As long as the NICBCS was used in advance of the sale being completed, why should it be an issue?

Docs's advice is spot on

Bob K. Been awhile huh,,,,Those days are long gone...The nanny state is here to protect you from yourself...embrace it

Regarding the "how crazy is that" thing...and I know I'll be accused of derailing here...

A gun/weapon is a tool...a mechanical device..albeit a potentially dangerous but never-the-less, a mechanical device...nothing more. What's crazy is the opinion of uninformed people that somehow a gun will lead to violence and therefor the "government" needs to control these things. If I was so inclined I could walk past anyone on the street and stab them in the face with an ice pick. Are we to outlaw pointy things ?? (yes I know they've gone this route across the big pond).
