Hi, my wife and I have been narrowing our townhome search within middlesex / somerset counties. (we work in somerset near s. bound brook and piscataway, respectively). with a budget in the $300K range, we have found a number of options in all different complexes. We're trying to find something with 2 or 3 BR (preferably 3), garage or basement is a nice plus, and a little patio or outdoor space for the dog. I'd like to see if anyone has any tips or suggestions or perhaps some familiarity with the complexes we've been narrowing down to. I know central NJ in general, but am not sure about what it is like to live in one of these complexes. Here's the ones we are looking at right now that we might be choosing something soon. Please let me know what you think - any info at all would be appreciated! Think it terms of safety (walk or bike at night), activites, proximity to both parks and retail shops & restaurants, things like that. I think all of them would provide relatively short commutes to work so I am not worried about that. I also like the proximity to new brunswick or edison train to go to NYC once in a while. We have a little dog but no kids (yet!). We'll prob live in the townhome for 4-6 years and hopefully buy a big house then! Thanks so much in advance! And if you think we are missing any good reccomended complexes not listing here, let me know!
Franklin Township / Somerset - Easton ave corridor: Qualbrook Regency, Townhomes at Qualbrook, Carriage Homes at Qualbrook, Forrest Gate
Franklin Township / Somerset - rt 27 / s. brunswick corridor: Wynnefield, Beacon Hill, Society Hill, Somerset Glen, Beacon Hill, Nob Hill, Nassau Sqr
Piscataway: Birch Glen, Maple Woods, Maple Grove, Castle Point
We pretty much canceled out north brunswick due to the route 1 congestion in case you were wondering. The only one we liked there a little was Rennasance but it is kinda pricey.
From what I've seen, it appears that Nassau Square's end units are 3BR only. That's a turnoff for me.
I've never seen any issues with Society Hill - seems to be a diverse mix, lots of kids getting on the school buses.
I do have some concerns about Franklin, but since you don't have kids yet, and plan to get out before the kids are in school... more power to you.
Wynnfield (sp?) has some of the most ridiculously ugly units externally I've ever seen. It's good if it's a Picasso painting, it's no good if you're looking at resale down the road.
What about Whispering Woods? It's across the street (that street being Route 1) in South Brunswick.
My Mom lived in Society Hill in Franklin for a while...the townhome was very nice, but she could not use the pool because the crowd that lived there was so bad. I mean, BAD.
My friends lived in Beacon Hill they had a unit with the full basement, I have NEVER loved a layout of a townhome more.
You mean the winner of Money Magazine's "Biggest Bribe and Travesty" of 2008?
Oh come on! We're going to get a statue of Ghandi commissioned from India and planted in some "memorial" space to ward off the gangs that don't exist in FTWP!
What else could you ask for? A 100% sober town council during town council meetings? Ha!
so...interesting comments but any real tips / advice for me as I pursue our home hunting? so far we've narrowed it down to properties in the following 3 complexes in Franklin Twnship / Somerset:
Wynnefield
Qualbrook Regency
Lakewood
thanks!
