My childhood home was a large ranch and my parents had A/C units and I was never hot.
Today - I really cant believe most people have not converted their old homes to A/C.

I also grew up in an older home. When I was young (which was a long time ago) only my parents had a/c in their room. On the very hottest nights we would sleep in there on the floor. On other nights we had a sleeping porch 7 windows and a great breeze. When we got older and didn't tolerate the heat as weel we installed a 10K BTU (I think) in the living room and a smaller unit in the kitchen they cooled the entire downstairs of a center hall colonial. Then we put 2 in two of the three bedrooms and opened the doors and that cooled the whole second floor. It can be done.
It is also possible to put a/c into older homes. A bit pricey but well worth it.

I thougth my family was the only one that did this. I myself live in an old home and the same as Calico I have huge trees all around my home and I live up in a small hill so it stays cooler inside but at night I do have a window unit in my room. If you live in a more urban area w/ less trees and where the sun is beating on your place all day long then you're SOL because that would be unbearable.

We lived in Maplewood a few years back and did not have central air. It was unbearable for the month of August. We used window units but it never quite cooled the place down. To install central ac in our 1924 home would have cost about 20,000 so we did not put it in. When we moved to MA a few years later the real estate agent told us we did not need AC up there. Yeah right.....we bought a house with central air and was I ever glad. Now we live in the South and no matter where I live I will always get a place with central air. It is so worth it.

20K? That's way too high...I could have done it for around 8K. We seem to get the older, tougher jobs but that doesn't scare us...we are troopers.

It's not for lack of trying on my part, DW doesn't want to damage the plastered walls & the wood. :::shrugs:::

No need to damage the walls..we install the registers in the ceilings! Perhaps I should take a peek...
