cinz420,
Sorry to see you leave ME to go back to NJ/PA -- I was born in New Brunswick, lived in Edison until I was 17, from 1977 to 1996 lived between Highland Park and Browns Mills -- moved to Maine in 1996 and will never again reside in NJ !!! My inlaws are still in NJ, I have grandsons in Morrisville, PA and my mom is in VA, but my heart is here in Maine and that's where it will stay. I can't imagine going back to the rat race which I usually refer to as the armpit of the nation, there's so much more time here thatlets you focus on what really matters, life is slower and gives you more time to devote to what's important, values are different here and the lifestyle affords you the luxury of taking the time to smell the roses. Sign me 'never going back' ...

For nice downtowns, I like Mullica Hill. It is in a relatively less populated part of south Jersey, yet still quite close to Philly. Without traffic, you could be to the Whitman in 20 minutes (about 15 miles). I prefer the areas southwest of 42/AC Expressway, as the roads are generally less crowded and you can get more real estate for your dollar. On the downside, the public transit into the city is not nearly as easy as living in the Haddonfield type areas.

Default Try this

Collingwood NJ is a great town, it has a main street, it is up and coming, and there is a train that will take you into Philly (very very safe) for only $4.90 round trip. Just try to stay away from the Rt 130 Part. Also try, Westmont and Haddonfield. Other places nearby that are safe Marlton, Voorhees, Cherry Hill.

Good Luck! I lived in Cherry Hill for 30 years. Nice for familes.

Default Villas...ehhh it'll do

Elizabeth...

Well...the Villas is comprised of very small houses on very small pieces of land for the most part. In recent years the local folks with a little money to spare have been scooping them up and renting them out for ridiculous amounts of money. The schools are not rated the best there and there are little gangs at the high school. There are nicer places to live in south jersey for sure. But... If you do not mind being able to pass a bag of sugar from one end of your street to the other from inside the houses reaching out the windows it could be ok for you ... as long as there are no school aged kids involved.

Default thanks for the replies

Still haven't committed myself to moving back and its a year later. My dad's cancer has come back again - the reason for my initial thread curiously around the same time as last year. So while he's getting treatment and things are optimistic, I can't get the thought out of my head that I should be closer. I wholeheartedly agree that anything south of Portsmouth is "different". Instead of signs and ATMs being in Spanish - e me gusto mucho l'espagnol, there is something to be said when the ATM asks me if I want to do my transaction en francais or english. Its the simple things that endear me to Maine but its the only child in me that feels an obligation to my parents. Maybe its because I have not married or have children of my own that I feel this way but regardless, here I am begging the question - where can I feel settled? So, now I look to PA once again. NJ is not the place for me. That notion is re-enforced every time I go home. Bethlehem seems ok so I'm looking there.
Who knows, maybe a year from now - I'll be asking the SAME question. I really hope not though!
Thanks again - this is a lot cheaper than therapy.

Default moving back

My dad lived in Hammonton, it's a small town and part rural. Not much to do, actually nothing to do. Sicklerville is just that, alot of houses but not a town of any kind. Pitman is a very nice, safe place. It's old but has a cute downtown area, and very unique old houses. I just sold a house to a young couple last week in Pitman; they wanted quaint and affordable. Hope this helps.
