Where can you get the best house for your money in NJ? I'm talking about a 500k house at the most where I'd be relatively close to NYC since I will be working there. I only need about a 2 or 3 bedroom house. I'm not looking for a condo. I want something in a safe area, with a lot to do. This consits of malls, resturants, and great grocery stores. I live in NYC but also NJ part time but I'm in Central NJ so I'm way too far to commute to NYC.
Thanks for your help
You could try Bloomfield. Near NYC, many neighborhoods are within walking distance of transportation. You can easily find a nice 3br for around $400-450.
I thought of Bloomfield but dosen't it being so close to Newark make crime a mess?
It depends on the area. The north end borders Montclair and Clifton and it's beautiful. Houses bordering Newark area would be in the $300k range. The north end is very safe with very little crime.
I agree - Bloomfield is a great option. You said you are looking for a lot to do.
Malls - very close to GSP which will take you to all of the Paramus Malls and shopping. And of course Wayne is not far away either.
Restaurants/Shops - Bloomfield has its own wonderful restaurants, but is also very close to downtown Montclair with great shops and restaurants.
Parks - Brookdale Park is huge and has walking trails, tennis courts, playgrounds, archery field, dog parks, etc. Also many smaller local parks.
Stick to the North end (Oakview, Demarest, Brookdale) - you can find 2-3BR homes for a reasonable price - well within your range. Take a look: NJ - Garden State MLS, New Jersey - Garden State MLS (http://new.gsmls.com/public/ - broken link)
As for the tax issue... well, this is NJ after all. And being so close to NYC, you do pay for the proximity. But comparably to surrounding areas - Montclair and Glen Ridge, Bloomfield's taxes are very reasonable.

Buyers market bulls**t. Still Sellers market in Bergen County all around.
Prices have def come down in Bergen, and the bidding wars are done, but it is still high. The inventory is sitting longer though - so you may get lucky.
You could try Rutherford or Hasbrouck Heights or Wood Ridge too.
