Default Coyotes in Long Valley

We just moved to Long Valley 1 week ago. I have been hearing what sounds like wolves howling at night. It has been suggested that they are probably coyotes. We live on Schooleys mountain road. Should we be concerned about our kids playing in the backyard? I had worried about bears but now have this new concern. We have literally a forest in our backyard.
Thanks for any input anybody might have.

Definitely coyote. They have been there long before most people. I wouldn't be anymore concerned about them than any other "wild" animal. Common sense is often the best defense. Probably a good idea to make sure the kids know what coyote look like. Chances are, they will never see one. Welcome to scenic NW NJ.

Yuppers..Coyotes. We have them as well and have never heard of anyone getting attacked. Typically you will see one on it's own and they are harmless. It's when they are in packs that they can be dangerous. They are usually more afraid of you than you are of them. One comes through my yard every morning around 6:00. They're actually not that big... size of a med to small dog. Just don't leave food out at night - i.e. garbage cans. Or spray your garbage cans with off now and again..that seems to keep the bears and coyotes away from mine. Good luck op... you'll love LV.

It's the locals at the Mountain Bar.

OP...did you buy that place on the hill across from the Township Building? I'm curious because I was sure it was my neighbor who recently sold who bought that place. He's a rookie with Washinton Twp. Police Dept.

Thanks for all of your input. I guess we will have to learn to live knowing animals are around us! The bugs too are enormous! It sure is pretty and peaceful around here though.

We do not live across from the municipal building. We live close to the police station though.

That is a great area to live. Be sure to stop in at the Mountainview Inn for a bite and/or a drink. Also, just get yourself a large can of "Off", the mosquitos can be hell.

Make sure you hit the LV pub & brewery for their Octoberfest. Great micro brews. And don't forget to hop over the hill into Hackettstown / Mansfield area..great shopping and tons of food places. Mama's / Cafe Baci is great for inexpensive Italian... Welcome to our neighborhood
