"Unguarded Gates" by Thomas Bailey Aldrich:

Wide open and unguarded stand our gates,
Named of the four winds, North, South, East and West;
Portals that lead to an enchanted land
Of cities, forests, fields of living gold,
Vast prairies, lordly summits touched with snow,
Majestic rivers sweeping proudly past
The Arab's date-palm and the Norseman's pine--
A realm wherein are fruits of every zone,
Airs of all climes, for lo! throughout the year
The red rose blossoms somewhere--a rich land,
A later Eden planted in the wilds,
With not an inch of earth within its bound
But if a slave's foot press it sets him free.
Here, it is written, Toil shall have its wage,
And Honor honor, and the humblest man
Stand level with the highest in the law.
Of such a land have men in dungeons dreamed,
And with the vision brightening in their eyes
Gone smiling to the fagot and the sword.

Wide open and unguarded stand our gates,
And through them presses a wild motley throng--
Men from the Volga and the Tartar steppes,
Featureless figures of the Hoang-Ho,
Malayan, Scythian, Teuton, Kelt, and Slav,
Flying the Old World's poverty and scorn;
These bringing with them unknown gods and rites,
Those, tiger passions, here to stretch their claws.
In street and alley what strange tongues are loud,
Accents of menace alien to our air,
Voices that once the Tower of Babel knew!
O Liberty, white Goddess! Is it well
To leave the gates unguarded? On thy breast
Fold Sorrow's children, soothe.

Some things never change... This poem was written 113 years ago by the same kind of pessimist who believes that America is hopelessly doomed. Funny how we've grown beyond our wildest dreams since then-and we'll continue to do so. Why? Because we're the single greatest nation in the history of the world-due in no small part to immigrants. They'll continue to assimilate and we'll continue to prosper, plain and simple.

I've never seen a Catholic knocking on someone's doors handing out pamphlets and recruiting either. That's typically the Mormons or Jehovah's Witnesses, which are kind of pseudo-Christian religions. And sometimes the more "born again" type evangelical and pentecostal churches will do some sort of handing out literature and whatnot.

In the extreme Islamic countries, which far outnumber the tolerant ones such as Jordan, women have no rights, they are nothing more then chattel..by the way I use the word "tolerant" loosely.

The extreme Islamists want this to be the religion of the world as well as the law, Sharia, of the lands......the world at first turned a deaf ear & blind eye to Hitler..look at the result

Some reading if you are a reader the first is factual the 2nd & third fiction based on what is happening in Islamic countries:

Reading Lolita in Terhan
The Kite Runner
1000 Splendid Suns
Well I guess I'd better throw out my hats as I would be headless.

And the Catholic church...Christian groups...lobbying against LGBTs? Do you think that's ok? I beleive that we all have a right to believe as we wish..but I don't think religion should be forced on others.

Nothing is being forced on you. If I, as a Catholic, oppose homosexual getting married, that is my right. It is also your right to support homosexuals being able to marry. We can then vote for elected officials who share our opinions, and what then happens is the wishes of the majority of people will be carried out. That's what a democracy is all about. But just because an opinion of mine may be rooted in my religious beliefs does not mean that I don't have the right to that opinion and that I don't have the right to vote based on my beliefs. If my beliefs are in the minority, they won't become reality anyways.

Assimilate..that's the key word. Islamic extremists will not assimilate

I have never seen the Catholic church behind the beheading/hanging of someone because they are gay. I have with Islam.

I don't think churches-any church/religion should be in politics as I don't think you do either. All religion needs to stay out of politics or lose their non-profit status IMHO. But you see-that is the problem and what we get with Islam-it is government run and mandated religion. With Islam there is no other religion or groups lobbying to take away your rights. The governement has already done that. I can understand your feelings about the Catholic church and how they pertain to LGBT- I really do. However in your earlier post you stated they would be worse than Islam. Do you realize how many gay people are murdered and tortured simply for being gay and Muslum?

Agreed. I'm voting for a politician who feels pedophiles should be executed... even those in cloaks
