Hello. We are considering a move to New Jersey. My husband would be working in Jersey City, and he would like a reasonable commute (30 min or LESS, if possible). More importantly, we'd like to live someplace with good schools, real yards, maybe swimming pools, etc. Not sure if we can get that or not. We would probably spend in the 600-700 thousand range. Is that doable? Where would we look?

Thanks so much!!!

Hehe, I think your husband may have posted a bit earlier under a slightly different screen name.

In any case, it might be difficult to keep the commute 30 minutes door to door, but depending on the size home you need, you can probably find something reasonably close.

If he will be driving, Millburn would be about 1/2 hour or maybe just a tad more with traffic (at least on a good day). it's a very nice town and I have heard good things about its schools. You might be able to find something under 700K there--it won't be one of the big mansions there, but I saw a few decent places in that range a few months ago.

Be warned that taxes in Essex County (where Millburn is located) are generally EXTREMELY high, however, even by New Jersey standards. And Essex is likely to have a number of the places with 30 min commutes.

If he will be primarily using transit, it would be best to live near a train that stops at Newark Penn Station, where he can connect to the PATH to Jersey City; or to live near a line that stops in Hoboken, from which he can also take the PATH. This is assuming he will work closer to the Exchange Place station in the financial district.

One other thing I should mention--coming from somewhere else, everything in New Jersey is likely to be much more expensive. House prices, property taxes, car insurance, and other costs are much higher than just about anywhere (outside of the Northeast and California, at least). So depending on your definition of upscale, 700K might do it, but that's not quite into the "luxury" segment in the nice towns closer to NYC.
