New Hope and Lambertville are adorable! If you PM me your email address, I can link you to my online photo album with loads of pictures of Lambertville. My husband and I were going to buy there when I got a promotion and now work in mid-town Manhattan. We use to live in Annandale and would go to Flemington, Clinton, New Hope, Lambertville often. We went to Frenchtown but were unimpressed because it's just a small strip of town and that's it. If I had to choose between them and wasn't concerned with commuting... I'd definitely choose Lambertville.

I couldn't agree more...over hyped! New Hope and Lambertville blow Frenchtown away! I made it thru Frenchtown in like an hour and was left feeling empty. Small main street town..great for a one day trip but I don't think I would consider moving there.

Default Frenchtown

A great deal of Frenchtown is above the 100 year flood plain....most of the quaint town. [mod] no advertising [/mod]

If you are looking to be secluded than Frenchtown is a good choice. Nearby Flemington and Clinton are pretty busy IMO. Also, look into Kingwood Twp -- this is smack between Frenctown and Flemington. It is mostly farms or houses on 3 acres or more of property. I lived in the area for a few years and do not recall any flood problems. There is a nice park across the river from Frenctown called Tinicum Park. And Rt 29 is a nice ride, maybe even on your bike, to other nice parks, flea markets, and the like. Other charming towns include Ringoes, Rosemont, Seargentsville... these towns are near Frenchtown or a tad South of Frenchtown. I do not recommend going North of Frenchtown... it starts to get junky IMO. Oh, and Lambertville is crowded, too... I think the towns South of Frenchtown on Rt 29 until you reach Lambertville are in line with what you are looking for. It seems many people are forgetting that you want seclusion and nature and wanted to move to Maine. These trendy towns are not for you, my friend. Another sweet little place is Pittstown -- it is North of Kingwood Twp.

Milford was pretty nice I thought. All Frenchtown needs is a real nice first run/ art movie theatre designed to very nicely fit into the towns charm. They should also mix in a few classy natinal brand stores like Banana Republic and White House/Black Maret and of course talbots. The rest should be mom and pop stores. Frenchtown needs to set itself apart from other Delaware river towns and this would definetely accomplish that.

Funny, I was specifically thinking of Milford when I wrote that the towns North were junky... and it just gets worse as you go further (Alpha, yuk). Anyways, that's just my opinion. Others may like the area.

Long ago, Frenchtonw used to have "the barn." It was a movie theater... I think they showed movies outside on the side of the barn, if I remember correctly. I don't know if it is still there but it sounded cute to me.

No, only a few houses along river road and railroad avenue flood. The rest is dry. Mine is the first house on my side of the street from the river and i never see any moisture in my basement. Frenchtown is full of a wide array of people with many different interests, yet everyone knows each other and coexist very nicely. I have a "Frenchtown, NJ" group on Facebook that has the latest news and summaries from the local council and planning board meetings, you should read them to get an idea of what is going on in town.

Someone earlier said it's an "artsy fartsy" town. There is certainly an artsy vibe to the town, but also some real down to earth people. Many of the local merchants are also residents. Check out this blog from an out of towner's view of Frenchtown... perspective1983.blogspot.com/2009/07/new-york-is-not-only-place-for.html?showComment=1246651031437#c16873975521073 21283

I live in Essex County right now so I am looking for something a little less crowded, a lot slower and closer to nature. I was thinking of moving out of state at first to Washington or Maine but my parents want me nearby at least for a few years so that they can make sure I am survive on my own. So I agreed to stay in NJ. So now I am back to researching areas in NJ. I found this quaint little town during my research called Frenchtown in Hunterdon County. I am going there this Sunday to look around and get a feel of the area. I think I am going to like it since it is everything I am looking for. My only concern though is that that area is known to flood. The last big flood was 2006 but obviously it could happen at any time. I am wondering though does all of the area flood or just the parts by the water? I do not think the town is that big so I would imagine it would encompass the whole area but I am not entirely sure I can't find anything about this on the internet. That is a big concern to me because I am taking all of my belongings with me so I obviously do not want anything to happen to them. If by chance my assumption is correct about the flooding does anyone know any other little towns like Frenchtown that would be nice to move to within NJ or borderline PA? I want to be in a little village like town with hiking trails and lakes possibly nearby. Any help would be greatly appreciated as I am doing all of this research on my own and am starting to get seriously stressed. Thanks again.
The one time I was in Frenchtown I couldn't wait to get out. It's a very strange town, empty factories on the river which doesn't jive with the artsy kinda thing they want to push on the town. I saw crazy people walking around too. Not a place I would move to. I thought the town was lipstick on a pig.

Hey don't get stressed out it's all a good. Take it from someone who's had to pick from a deep hat, scopin new haunts out, from places as distant as Boulder, CO, the UK near Newmarket Rd, Cambridge, UK, Skerries, County Dublin Eire,
PDX, Oregon, Missoula, MT and on and on and on! No stress. You post a query about the floods? Great Pics Highwing! Now you have your answer; move to Frenchtown if you ax me, mate, the other suggestions are not in quality of an equal disposition: New Hope (my home town) yeah OI! No. None of it! although you might make a go in Stockton if you like that quaint parlour-type feel, it's all a little wind-blown mind you!!

There is few for placement as well as for good taste as Frenchtown, I reckon I'm tryin to make a move there too for the same reason: but I consider those river floods as something to revere not to mention the tubing, swimming and country-livin; go for it--where you gonna work though, between your fishin days?

The factories were recently bought by Georgia Pacific and International Paper. They are beginning the clean up phase, as that land is quite polluted. Its prime real estate, right on the Delaware.

Georgia-Pacific, International Paper buy Milford mill -

I happen to think that the whole area is a great, unpretentious area of NJ. Milford is an undiscovered gem of a town. Its not perfect and gentrified like New Hope or Stockton, its more real and accessible. There is no rush hour here, and everyone is pretty laid back for NJ. Its Pennsylvania laid-back, and the area revolves more around PA than NJ.

Plus, its 1 hour to Trenton, Princeton, Bridgewater, Morristown, and Hackettstown. 1/2 hour to Lehigh Valley, Flemington, Clinton and even casinos so everything you need is close enough but it remains off the beaten path.
