Thinking of moving to Frenchtown
I am getting ready to finally move out of my parents house and get a place of my own. I am looking for a quaint little area that is not totally secluded from everyday life. I live in Essex County right now so I am looking for something a little less crowded, a lot slower and closer to nature. I was thinking of moving out of state at first to Washington or Maine but my parents want me nearby at least for a few years so that they can make sure I am survive on my own. So I agreed to stay in NJ. So now I am back to researching areas in NJ. I found this quaint little town during my research called Frenchtown in Hunterdon County. I am going there this Sunday to look around and get a feel of the area. I think I am going to like it since it is everything I am looking for. My only concern though is that that area is known to flood. The last big flood was 2006 but obviously it could happen at any time. I am wondering though does all of the area flood or just the parts by the water? I do not think the town is that big so I would imagine it would encompass the whole area but I am not entirely sure I can't find anything about this on the internet. That is a big concern to me because I am taking all of my belongings with me so I obviously do not want anything to happen to them. If by chance my assumption is correct about the flooding does anyone know any other little towns like Frenchtown that would be nice to move to within NJ or borderline PA? I want to be in a little village like town with hiking trails and lakes possibly nearby. Any help would be greatly appreciated as I am doing all of this research on my own and am starting to get seriously stressed. Thanks again.

great choice but you will feel isolated! Take a look at Hope NJ as well..closer to mom and dad . Flemington is cute as well..a bit larger than French town but very cute..Clinton Town is also very cute.

Frenchtown is a very quaint little river town but it does flood from time to time as do a lot of the towns along the Delaware River, Lambertville, New Hope, parts of Trenton etc.
The two bad floods, that I remember in Frenchtown where 2004 (hurricane Ivan) and 2006.
Here are some pics I found...
Frenchtown Flood of 2006- Aerial Photographs
I suggest you check it out, visit the local shops and businesses (there is at least one insurance agent in town), talk to the folks and then if you decide it is for you, find something on the third floor!
Have fun and good luck

Those areas you see flooded are just south of Main St. along the D & R Canal, which is a nice bike riding trail. Even though it flooded twice in recent years, it is historicaly rare. I used to live just outside Frenchtown and think the area is one best in NJ. All the basic needs are there as far as grocery, pizza, resturants etc. You cannot beat The Frenchtown Cafe for breakfest (one of the few things I miss about NJ). The Frenchtown Inn is one of the top rated resturants in the state (At least it used to be). If you want to have some adult fun, New Hope is close by.
Flemington is only 10m away for Home Depot, fast foods, movies, outlet shopping etc.

If those were pictures from the south end does that mean not all of Frenchtown floods?
