And your point is??? Just because some parents send their kids to Union public schools doesn't mean it's a good school district. They probably don't have any other choice. Truth be told, Union schools have been on the slide for the past decade (this is no big secret). In fact, the new Portuguese population you're touting is a direct result of a fleeing Caucasian community whose biggest reason for migrating is the declining public schools.

My dad used to live in Union (near the border with Hillside and Elizabeth) and I have either been there or driven through several times. Most of Union is a safe, middle class town and the downtown area on Morris Avenue is pretty decent as well. On what street is the new house located?

i thought the schools in Union (at least the elementary schools) have a great reputation. I keep hearing how Washington and Livingston are supposedly two of the best elementary schools not only in the area but in the state, the scores on the nj report card are pretty good, and parents have told me nothing but good things about the elementary schools...the high school is another story

Admittedly, I can’t speak for the elementary schools, but I’ve heard the middle schools and the high school, in particular, leave a lot to be desired. I know people who’ve left Union for just that reason.

Ive heard that the elementary schools are really good, the middle schools are ok and the high school is decent at best...but that seems to be what i here about a lot of places esp diverse areas (for example linden and even montclair, and maplewood). Ive noticed kids in the sunnside section of linden getting catching the bus to private schools one they are no longer elementary school age.

I went to Union schools finished them 9 years ago and i have a lot of friends that are moving in and sending their kids to school and they dont have problems. Many graduated went to colleges and are happy with Union schools, of course there were fights between students but which school is perfect and without kids getting into argument and fight, it happens everywhere. You are not going to see metal detectors in school or cameras, education level is high and teachers are willing to help students and work with them. Union is not the best there is, but it wont brake your bugdet and is good town for the prices you pay for houses and taxes. There are a lot of towns that are more expensive and dont have half of what Union has to offer. It is somewhat diverse both with race and incomes but thats what actually makes it attractive that you dont have to be better then your neighbor next door and have better then him like some towns here (summit)

Actually most of the people that are buying houses in Union are Portugese, all my neighbors are portugese and are bringing more friends and family into Union. And what are portugese they are caucasian from Europe, wherever they are real estate values go up because they really take care of places where they live. Union high school maybe is not the best and Burnet Middle school might not be best also but look at Kawamee middle school there is nothing bad about that school. Of course those 2 schools (high school and Burnet are affected by Vauxhall section of the town) but they arent horrible or bad. Overcrowded maybe but when it comes to education level they are not lowering it so kids would pass like they do in Irvington or other towns. I could argue about this whole day but everybody is free to have their own opinion.

That's near Kenilworth and Roselle Park and is a nice section of town. It's pretty close to the Roselle Park and Union train stations if you need to commute into the City.
