Paying property tax on outbuildings?
Does anybody know if there's a general rule on whether or not you have to pay property taxes on an outbuilding (detached garage, shed, etc...) based on the type of construction? Does it vary by municipality? My parents live in Hamilton and they have two sheds on their property that simply sit on concrete pilings sunk into the ground. They are not attached to them in any way that would constitute a true foundation. The sheds were pre-assembled by the Amish and trailered to the site. At least in Hamilton they do not pay property tax on these.
What about pole barns? I guess individual posts set in concrete could constitute a foundation, but I would probably leave the floor dirt or gravel for time being and finish it with a concrete slab later.

Each town is different but it's typically anything over 1000 SF requires a permit and possibly a foundation. You'll need to check with your specific twp.

Wouldn't it be a whole lot easier and to the point just to pick up the phone and call your local building inspector etc ??

I left a message yesterday-High Bridge is much smaller than even Hopewell and as a result our construction official is shared between two or three other towns. It can take quite a while for him to get back to people. I was just hoping to see what other folks' experience had been in the meantime.

You need to talk to the zoning officer not the const. official. I even had to go and meet with ours on a monday night to discuss the shed installation..setbacks, size, etc. I then had to mark out where I wanted to put things and have him come and check the measurements before he would approve it..his approval was required before I could even file for a construction permit with the twp.

Same here : ) Monday nights only for the zoning officer and tues and thurs for the const. official. Our const. guy does like 5 or 6 towns! And his brothers do the other towns..lol - talk about Mayberry! The O'Connor Brothers. You can ask the secretary to fax you their zoning and/or const. requirements for sheds, outbuildings etc.
