Default What county or town is good for commuting to jersey city?

I have teetering between rockland county or just packing it up and convincing DH to go to Jersey.

I have read thru the threads on NJ, but most are commuting to the city...and we need to commute to Jersey City.

I have NO idea on areas in Jersey city..I do know bergen...but I want to explore other areas.

What town or county fits my bill...LOL.

1. Schools are important..we have three young children (elementry, preschool and baby).

2. No more than a 1 hour commute to Jersey city.

3. We like subdivisions, new homes (preferable with a pool and tennis courts....sidewalks (walking trails) dont mind paying a home owners association fee...we just want a "trick or treating type of neighborhood where kids actually "play" outside). Nothing with lots of land or secluded.

4. No more than a 10 minute drive to minor shopping (grocery stores and cvs) and major shopping and restaurants.

5. My husband will drive..so whatever parkway it is...it should be close.

I prefer towns that take pride in their appearance..I am not a fan of "revitalized towns" or the artsy feel to it. Not a fan of "some parts are nice, and then some you need a bullet proof vest". I see too often you see a nice subdivision and then trailor parks right next door.

Are there any counties that have more newer construction going on versus older construction? If anyone get give me their expertise and guide me as to what towns or counties to look at that would be great.

Price range would be up to about 700-800k tops...(prefer less in this market)....

I have heard that there are lots of builder closeouts and quick delivery homes that are aggressively prices in the 500 range..but I dont know where they are!

Give me the good that bad and the ugly!

Nutley would be perfect for you. I am not sure what your budget is but the Cambridge Heights Townhome complex is nice. The schools there are pretty good, it is safe and just a short commute down route 3 to Jersey City. If you wanted to take the train you could take the train to Hoboken then a path to JC.

In a recent thread I advised someone on commute to Weehawken by trains (and tried to steer them into Cedar Grove area). Will do same for you here below.

Consider the eastern sections of Cedar Grove and Little Falls (and maybe SW corner of West Paterson) closest to Montclair State University and their new train park & ride stop. The Hoboken train service should have more options from the MSU park & ride including a few Hoboken bound expresses (which by-pass the towns down the line). At Hoboken transfer to the PATH or HBLRT light rail trains to JC. So I am thinking you can get good schools (CG/LF) and train service. Plus you will near junctions of RT3/46 (23/80 closeby) too.

Cedar Grove has the walking/jogging trail (aka west essex trail) and park w/town pool, tennis. They have new(er) condo/townhomes too. Major shopping, CVS, and restaurants = Pompton Avenue or Main St in Little Falls. Note that LF & WP have condo/townhomes too, but I'd lean to CG. What I like about CG is that you border Verona, Montclair, and LF. Verona Park and some of the Montclair parks are awesome. Awesome restuarants in all towns, plus the Pilgrim and Verona diners too.

My honest opinion, from everything you stated, Cedar Grove should be the place to be. (Just beware of taxes, its Essex Co.)

I've always heard great things about Montclair, NJ, and according to Mapquest it is just 29 minutes from Jersey City (I'm assuming closer to 45 minutes or an hour given congestion). Best of luck!
