No one in my family nor myself has ever owned a slave. There is extensive legislation on the books in 2008 America that prohibits discrimination of any type, when it comes to hiring, lending practices, etc. I can't turn back the hands of time and undo every misstep every citizen of this country has perpetrated against others.
There will always be racism in this country. Human beings are innately discriminatory, in every aspect. In spite of this, you have to rise above this prediliction. There are many peoples from many descents (the Jews come to mind immediately) that have been discriminated against since the beginning of time, but still manage to flourish and succeed.
Hyphens do nothing except to drive wedges between members of society.

Defensive, aren't we? I didn't accuse you or any of yours of being a slaveholder. And I didn't say you had the power to undo any missteps, although as a white male, maybe you do. 
Hyphens are mere figures of punctuation. The presence of wedges in this society are independent of them. I mean, I theoretically could live anywhere I want, if I have the means to do so, but that doesn't mean certain folks would want to keep me away. That has absolutely nothing to do with any hyphen I might choose to use.

No, I am not defensive. I just couldn't disagree more strongly with your rebuttal. The hyphens are punctuation, but the connotations behind the hyphens are intended to be divisive. If someone has a problem with you because of your skin color, guess what? There is absolutely nothing you can do about it. Just move on and go about your business. Their point of view might be offensive, but, it's not illegal. There is nothing that Barack Obama or Capitol Hill can do about it. That change has to come about through education. And I'd say over the past 100 years, 50 years, 20 years, etc, we are making great progress. In spite of many flaws, this is the most harmonious country in the history of the world with a multicultural population.
