OMG you are not joking. I have a relative who is the goofiest, whitest kid you've ever seen. He lives so deep in white suburbia he has probably only seen 3 people of color in his life. He is telling us how he's a "gangsta" and he should be in the "hood." My husband and I just cracked up. Where like "Shut up and go play your freaking Wii on your big screen TV in your central air home...."

I have never seen Obama denying that he's white. I thought his speech on race earlier this year - where he discussed how he has black and white heritage - was brilliant.

I want to disagree with you about children not knowing that people are different based on race. My son is 5 years old, for instance, and there is a black child in his kindergarten. Not in his class, but in kindergarten, period. She is the only black child in the school. But, my son asked me about "this brown girl" in his school last Friday. I told him she was brown, but she was no different from him, other than her skin color. My only point here is that he hadn't previously seen a black person, because in Southern New Mexico, black residents are very few, and since he had initial exposure, of course, his innocent 5 year old brain asked a logical question: Why was her skin brown?
I WOULD be thrilled if JC Watts were the Republican nominee, because that would at least in part refute some of the ideas and perceptions I have had of the Republican Party as a party that is intrinsically anti-African American. I have many reasons to think that; perhaps Watts (or Alan Keyes, or other prominent black conservatives) does not. You are right - people ARE different; we come in all types, races, colors, etc.........Children notice that. What they learn in life, from adults, is the stereotypes and nasty notions we use to justify hatred of, or bias against, those not like ourselves.

I think Obama was doing his best to avoid the issue for as long as he could. When he couldn't avoid it anymore he gave his speech on race at the Constitution Center.

I'm not expecting anything big from him. He's just another politician. Sure, I like what I hear him saying a lot more than the other guy but in the end he's still a politician and it doesn't really matter what they say. It's what they do that matters. And far from being a uniter or much of a decider these past 8 years have been a divisive and indecisive disaster.

In the end I'll vote for Obama because, in many aspects, I can relate to him our lives and politics have a lot of common threads. I have nothing in common with the other guy just like I have little in common with Hillary.
I agree with you 150%.

I think Obama got as far as he has precisely because he did NOT make his race an issue. He never presented himself as a "black candidate" and he has always said we all have more that unites us than we have that divides us and I STRONGLY believe in that.

Clearly, I'm voting for Obama in November and encourage others to do so. No, I don't think he'll be the best President ever...and I question his (and anyone else who WANTS to be President of America today) sanity for WANTING to inherit this mess. But like you, if given the choice between him and McCain...I'm for Obama. I can't think that a man who has 11 homes can relate to the average American.

But I do think that as human beings we have the right to know that hard work will entitle you to a home in an area that is safe, that your family can eat nutritional food, and that you can afford the health care you need.

I also feel that as a society we have an obligation to care for those who may not be able to care for themselves. This is not something that I would base on race because it is absolutely insulting and wrong to assume someone can't care for themselves based on that criteria. I am talking about the elderly, the disabled, etc. I don't think a society where we throw the have nots to the curb is moral or ethical. I also do not feel it is best for society as a whole, even the haves will suffer in the long run.

That said, I also believe that the US is not remotely close to being the "land of opportunity" that it was once considered to be. I think being born poor in America is a huge albatross that you will have for the rest of your life. Of course there are stories of those who make it out - some make it to the highest office of the land - but let's be honest, that is a rarity. It's the exception, it's not the rule. Most are lucky if they can get to one little rung above where they came from. If you are a child, and you are poor, you don't know that you are poor. You don't realize that your neighborhood may not be the best, your school is inadequate, perhaps your diet and medical care is not what it should be. You will realize it in time, but by then there is considerable damage done.

Now, I know life is not "fair." It's not fair here, or anywhere. But I think what really infuriates me more than anything is how people can get so upset over affirmative action when affirmative action is far less responsible for under qualified applicants getting in to a college of choice than the "legacy" system is. I think it is unfair that so many feel an uninsured child getting needed healthcare or a poor senior getting a free meal is unacceptable, but bailing out S&Ls, mortgage companies, and corporations is all part of "doing business."

The powerful all ready have so much given to them. And sadly many no longer understand the meaning of "to whom much is given, much is expected." So I really don't know why trying to even the playing field is such a dreadful thing. I know the abuses and what it can become, but the idea of it should not be seen as a bad thing.

I suggest you do a Youtube search of Obama's speeches on race. He has NEVER said he is a black candidate, he has never "run" as a black man. He has run.

Yes, I agree. Hard work is touted, but being working class is not. I think this has it roots in the popular media.

Rock Stars, Sports Stars, CEO's, Dr.s, Lawyers, at a few other fictional things are glorified. If you work hard and don't make lots of $$$ you are essentially "stupid".

Consider that old episode of Saturday Night live where the plumber character was showing his but crack... that's the general idea pushed.

Beyond that, the media does seem to have a bias against southerners. The NASCAR thing you mention. For some reason "white trash" is OK to say loudly. Put any other race in the adjective position there... and you are a racist.

I don't know what the solution is. Survival, money, push us all into separate corners. Quite likely that unless a threat to all our survival, collectively, comes along, it will stay the same.

Well, until everyone becomes a grey or whatever you would call a racially homogenous mix.

But then, because it seems to be a human trait to do so, there'd just be other divisions. Smarter/dumber, faster/slower, taller/shorter.

Discernement/discrimination appears to be some inate thing we do.

HANDOUT HANDOUT HANDOUT.

I don't know what the most recent statistic is, but the average American receives all that they put in to the SS system relatively early on in their retirement. And after that - it's a HANDOUT. Yet retired wealthy of our country keep pocketing it even though they shouldn't - they think it's an "entitlement." Bill Clinton was saying he does not want his SS $ but he has no choice, so he chooses to donate his to charity. I'm sure Rush Limbaugh will do that one day too....
