Their point of view might be offensive, but, it's not illegal. There is nothing that Barack Obama or Capitol Hill can do about it. That change has to come about through education. And I'd say over the past 100 years, 50 years, 20 years, etc, we are making great progress. In spite of many flaws, this is the most harmonious country in the history of the world with a multicultural population.
I'm going to disagree with you on the hyphens- although I understand where you are coming from. I think we should all view each other first and foremost as fellow human beings. Then, as Americans, we should see each other as just that. However, I don't think we should forget where we came from - it makes each of us who we are and I think our varied histories is our country's greatest asset. So saying African-American, Irish-American, Catholic-American, Greek-American, Mexican-American, Gay-American, Jewish-American, Muslim-American, even... though it is not heritage - Liberal or Conservative or Democratic or Republican or Independent American - should be something that you can proudly be.... if we'd only RESPECT each other instead of attacking each other.

Maybe the utopia I want will never exist, but I refuse to give up thinking it can be.

No - I just think it should be adjusted to have a socio-economic component to it is well. Ironically, I share that opinion with Senator Obama.

Reminds me of my husband in college. He is of Cuban descent and he was arguing communism with someone in class...they were very pro-communism and my husband having lived under it, is not. (He's also not a capitalist, I assure you!) anyway - he's having this argument and then he sees the SOB driving off in a brand new Corvette. The next day he was like "and you'd have THAT car in a communist nation!" LOL You have to try to walk the walk

My proof has been living as an African descendant in America for the past 40+plus years. That, and being reasonably sentient (i.e., having a pulse). The composition of Dubya Bush's Cabinet, or for that matter, Reagan's Cabinet, or Poppy Bush's Cabinet, means bupkes to me. What matters is the policies of the party, the symbolism (Philadelphia, Miss?), and the playing on racial fears (i.e. Willie Horton) that has been going on in my lifetime. I venture here that I've got all the proof I need........Love that Reagan quote by the way..........it suits you.

That USA Today article is part of what is so f'ed up about journalism in this country. Enough of the %'s of who is what color? Who gives a damn? Evidently, though, the hard left and the journalistic component care, a lot!

However, when it comes to something REALLY IMPORTANT, like sports then the media seems to be absent when it comes to examining rosters of professional or college sports teams. Because, after all, here, unlike the real world, the emphasis seems to be actually on winning, fielding the best team possible. Could you imagine, for instance, if Rod Thorn, the GM of the NJ Nets basketball team, one day said, "wait, I want affirmative action for my team! I want a team that looks like America! So, we'll get 70% White, 12.5% Black 5% Asians, another 5% Mexican Americans, and another 7.5% two or more races etc, to round out my 15 man roster, and we'll call it whole!" But you know what? The team probably wouldn't do so well, would it? And Thorn would be issued his pink slip. Same with the NFL, MLB, the NHL, and college scholarship allocations. You see, in the NCAA, athletic scholarships are similarly not allocated on the basis of race, where as when it comes to academic admissions, there are quotas to be filled. And the Supreme Court voted it down! Remember the University of Michigan case a few years ago.

It's amazing that an activity as banal as sports strips quotas, because there are tons of $$ at stake, but in the real world, where critical decisions have to be made, there is always challenge on the left that there is not adequate minority representation. In collegate departments, such as pre-law, pre-med, etc, there are quotas everywhere. Forget the brightest and the best, there is an obsession about how many people get to go where, and for what purpose.

This is why I could never vote for a liberal Democrat. They are obsessed with race, to the point where it cripples their ability to think with any sort of clarity.

Sports are a meritocracy. If you can play, you play. The better you are, the more you play. The more you play, the more money you make. The team that scores the most points wins. And EVERYONE gets a chance to show what they can do. Those who are not youth league stars don't make it to high school. Those who are not stars in high school don't make it to Division I. And those who are not Division I stars don't usually make it to the pros. That's called meritocracy, and that's the only pure example of this we have in society.

In the real world, where there are critical decisions to be made, not everyone gets an equal chance to show what they can do. This is why we have mechanisms in place to try to assure at least a shot at equal opportunity. How can you, or anyone, for that matter, determine who is the brightest and the best?

That's why I could never vote for a conservative Republican. They only give a damn about the powerful. Think? What's that?

You are truly blind. That quote is from the USA article and not Reagan. You read what you want to read.

Since you've been here for 40 years plus, then you should remember that a higher % of Republicans voted for passing the Act than against it.

Civil Rights Act of 1964 - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Willie Horton was a convicted criminal. Of course there are fears when someone kills another human being. But leave it up to the Dems to get him out of jail and once out of jail he kills again.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Willie_Horton

Open your eyes and put down the kool-aid. Plus your hatred has consumed you. While I wasn't a big fan of Clinton, I aways called him by his proper name.
