Look, I'm not trying to deny anyone anything. I think everyone should have access to healthcare! I do not believe it would be good for people with chronic/serious issues to have our system modeled on Canada's.
Furthermore, I find it sad when people who have insurance get a higher or another bill (out of pocket/not covered by insurance) to make up for those who don't have insurance.

When you are covered by a policy - be it individual or group - your coverage is only as good as the policy is. If your plan is $100 copay per hospital stay - you'll pay $100, even if the bill is $200,000. If your co-pay is 20%, you will pay 20%. That's what you are paying for. Not someone else's bills.
Also, someone mentioned "that's why it is charity care." Charity care is not always free...not at all. And you're not always approved for it. I knew of a man who was working but had no insurance, he had an emergency appendectomy in HUMC and was told he'd qualify for charity care. Well, long story short, he didn't. And his bill was astronomical and he was paying it off for years. Again, not a lazy man, just someone working in a crap job with no insurance. It happens, more often than you'd think.
Look I am so not a person who thinks people should be "get overs." I've never gotten over for anything in my life... I work my @ss off... always have since I was 15... but I am just not heartless. And I do think that healthcare should not be something for the "haves" only.
