So rutgers football was pretty good prior to the early 90's?

I thought they were always pretty bad

They were somewhat competitive, but they weren't "big time" since they did not join the Big East until '91. Before that, we played a lot of Lehighs, Cornells, Delawares, etc, with the occasional big name opponent. But the mid 90's - 2003 were just God awful.

it is strange because jersey has always produced top quality recruits

But PSU, Syracuse, and Various others always gobble them up

How come none of these home grown kids want to stay

Nobody wants to stay close to home when they go off to college! Its time to get away from mom and dad and have fun. its the same reason all the great HS football players produced in PA all go to Ohio and Michigan.

PSU and Pitt still get to keep a large amount of their own unlike the Jerz

USC and UCLA still get most the SoCal kids

Illinois, and Northwestern also get most the Chicagoland kids

Lots and actually most of the big schools get to keep their own, just look at the SEC or Big 12

It is like all the best players hate Jersey, and just scatter everywhere

That's changing, though. The success of the RU program is keeping some of the top recruits in NJ. Until just a couple of years ago, great NJ football prospects wouldn't have had any reason/incentive to stay in-state and play for one of the crappy programs we had here. Now we at least have one great Div 1 football program in the state.

NJ Chutzpah...that has all changed over the past 5 years or so, haven't you been paying attention? The Rutgers roster is STACKED with top talent from NJ. Many/most of them turned down schools such as Miami, Tennessee, Penn State, Notre Dame, Ohio State, Florida, etc etc to stay HOME, and play for Rutgers.

Hell, Coach Schiano turned down head coaching offers from MIAMI, and MICHIGAN to stay home and coach Rutgers. National Championship over the next decade or so is in the radar.

This season, expect a 9-3 type of year with a berth to a mid-tier bowl. Go RU !!

FYI, if you're a college football fan, you should really get to a game down in Piscataway this year, it's a great college football experience. All games are sold out, but you can either scalp or buy on StubHub. Just excuse the condition of the stadium (southern end is under construction and is quite unsightly with mountains of dirt).
