We are a military family moving to Jersey City in late December. My husband is an Army officer and is assigned to downtown Manhattan for 2 years. We have a 1 year old son and I stay home with him. We have a budget of $2600 for housing and we desire to live in a place with a quick commute to NYC as we plan to spend a lot of time there and my husband will be working there. We are looking for a 3 bedroom with decent parking nearby as we'll have our two cars with us. Safety (relatively speaking of course) is a top priority in addition to quick commute. It is so difficult to discern which areas are most appropriate for family living in this area. My husband will need to be within walking distance (a few blocks at most) to a PATH station if possible. If you had to raise your family in Jersey City, which areas (streets, etc) would you feel most comfortable with. We understand that "we're not in suburbia anymore" and that it will be an adjustment. We are excited about the challenge of living in an urban environment. We are just concerned about the security of our vehicles and myself staying home alone with our son. Any tips for finding housing in this area would also be appreciated. Common scams to avoid, etc. Thanks in advance! Please note I have read other posts about JC in this forum. The info was mixed and usually a lot of arguing between responders. Please just state your own personal opinion and don't worry about what others write. Everyone is different, I understand, and I will consider all posts with equal diligence!

Reason: added additional info
We're shooting for easy commute. JC was recommended by one of his coworkers. We are open to other options. While we will have 2 cars, we do not want to use them for commuting purposes if at all possible!
I live in Jersey City Heights which has good and bad parts. We own a 2 family home (3 bedrooms each unit) and I know you can probably rent 1/2 of a 2 family within your budget. Schools aren't an issue for you so we won't go there.
I live on the Western Slope. It's very quiet and family oriented. Other parts of the heights are very crowded and noisy, unsafe, etc. and I wouldn't recommend any area other than where I live which is West of Kennedy Boulevard. However, I am not walking distance to the path. I take the $1.50 van to Journal Square in the morning (8 minute ride)
There area really nice areas downtown you could rent, but I don't think for your budget you could get a 3 bedroom, but I may be wrong. Areas like Hamilton Park, Van Vorst Park are nice with lots of kids around. Parking would be a problem for one car, let alone 2. If you could, maybe find a parking garage but that is another expense.
If I were you I would contact a real estate agent. They can tell you which neighborhoood in JC will best suite your needs. Good luck!
LynnePatrice is right on the spot with her comments. I second that.
