Stay away from Newark-very dangerous city and it's a pity what happened to it. At one time it was very nice but that was years ago. I haven't been to Harrison in many years but I do remember it as having a bar on every corner. The people there were very hard working blue collar workers. There are many old towns in NJ that are going down the tubes and it is a shame. Urban sprawl-very few small family communities left. Sorry to sound depressing but if you were born and raised here you may know what I mean. Yes rebuild Newark and Camden and yes get out of Iraq. We have our own problems here.

I think you have come up with the perfect solution! Ditto for Camden as well.

Maybe a BunkerBuster would be better. There is not much plant life in Newark anymore. Napalm wouldn't work too good there.

I really don't consider Newark as a livable place in general.. Of course urban life is great but definitely not Newark! As someone mention before, Rutgers and NJIT are perhaps the only areas that you might feel a little safer, but anywhere else, forget about it!
However if you really want to live in that s*** pit, try to place yourself in Harrison or *mayyyyybe* Kearny, they are at least livable.. Especially Harrison, though some people still say that place is unsafe, but compared to other areas, Harrison is definitely VERY OK. I lived in Newark for about 4 years (Harrison and on campus) during my school years back in the day, and I don't think I will ever step into that place again. Mayor Booker is doing something nice.. he is trying, but..... I will let my grandchildren to find out the answer. |

I went to school at Rutgers - New Brunswick and had the opportunity to come down to NJIT a few times for a National Science Foundation seminar. Baxter Terrace is right around the corner. BT as they call it is the Bloods and Crips headquarters as well as drugs central.
I have since graduated about 6yrs ago and recently had to take a friend to Newark Airport from Livingston where I live so I decided to take South Orange Ave all the way to downtown to jump on 1&9 because my friend wanted to see what the hood was like. We got around the Vailsburg area at a traffic light and got pulled over. The cops drove past us then went like twenty feet and parked waiting for us - Honestly I was not speeding, not running any red lights or doing anything wrong or illegal other than just driving to Newark Airport and minding my business talking to my friend in the car. These fools I repeat fools walked to the car asked me to step out and straight up told me there was a warrant for my arrest without even checking my DL or asking for any form of ID. I asked why there was a warrant but I was told nothing meanwhiles they were busy searching the car ripped up my friend's suitcase and when I told them they had no right to search the car unless they show me the warrant or verify to me that I am the fugitive they were looking for, they do not have a case. I got arrested for being a smart mouth just for telling these fools how to do their jobs. They took me to the precinct where they locked me up for over four hours in a cell with criminals and drunkards. Meanwhiles I was not allowed to even make a phone call and my friend who is from Denmark was left by my car on South Orange Ave in front of Bradley Court. They later let me free after about five hours or so because they couldn't find anything on me so I was told I was FREE to go - but guess what when I tried to request the batch numbers of these two officers involved they told me I was being belligerant and irate so they threw me back into the cell for another two hours and gave me a disorderly conduct charge - a crime I never committed and which I have to go to court for. Several requests to speak to the Cpt. or Lt. was useless some big fool came out to tell me he was the Lt. and asked me to cooperate - (cooperate in getting my rights abused I don't think so). My friend ended up missing her flight anyways and had to pay a fee for that as well - she could have been raped, mugged or what have you but thank God nothing happened to her. To cut a long story short here is how a mid thirties professional male working in the IT industry was treated just for driving through the hood and minding my business. Newark is a shyt hole and will always be a shyt hole JUST stay clear - the incident was reported to Internal Affairs and its been over forty days now and I have not heard anything back from them - I have wasted my time and called several times but I kept being tossed around and it has been reported to the DOJ in DC...just waiting to see what happens. I could have been shot or anything else could have happened with these fools coming up saying I had a gun or tried to shoot at them, I have never been arrested before this was my first time and it was a false arrest. If only I was a little dumber I would have dropped out of my Comp Sci program at Rutgers back then and became a cop harassing people in Newark until I retire. Move to Newark at your own RISK...if the cops down there are this corrupt, crooked and shady who will be there to protect you or your family...give it a very serious thought..!!!! |

Ok you know everyone who says its disgusting doesnt live there. They have only drove through it or went to college there which doesnt mean that they experienced the city. People who do live there say it is bad but that it isnt like hell on earth like Camden is or Irvington or even East Orange. Plus it has a productive downtown so can I please hear from a Neward Resident that has lived in NEwark for a while and knows exactly what the city is like?

Ya know what .....F it. Just move there. How many people do you need to tell you that its a ish hole??? I live next to Newark. I am right on the border of Newark, I used to hang in Newark when I was young and stupid. My friends still live in Newark. My friends work in Newark. I drive through Newark everyday to get to work. My friends are Newark cops. I hate even going to the bakery on Bloomfield Ave to get my bread on Sundays because you feel like you are getting schemed on for a robbery. My friend's 80 year old grandmother was beatin and robbed in broad day light in front of a church!!! A church!! Those people have no respect, morals or conscience. They are animals!
NEWARK IS A DISGUSTING, ROTTEN, FILTHY, SLUM. I CAN'T WAIT TO GET OUT OF WHERE I AM EVEN THOUGH I DON'T LIVE IN THE HEART OF NEWARK THE SCUM IS INCHING ITS WAY INTO MY ONCE BEAUTIFUL ITALIAN TOWN. And no I'm not prejudice so don't even come back with that race card BS. There is no nice part of Newark, because even the part that has mansions is a ish hole because of the people that walk and drive around it and that part is only 10 blocks by 5 blocks. It seems like you are looking for a GREEN light from someone to tell you to move to Newark. Why? Just pack your stuff and move there already. There's only one sure way to find out if Newark is for you so do it! Just don't say that 100 people didn't warn you when you are walking on the street and get stuck up and pistol whipped for your North Face jacket. |

First of all if you live there - you know there is nothing to do but to cope with the crap going on because you chose to live there, secondly if you cannot get a good perception driving through the town then what else is there to say.
I personally know about five people who currently live in Newark and are all trying to relocate - ONLY two have been successful in selling the new houses they bought about two years ago and have moved out. After speaking to my friends each of them had their houses broken into at least three times even though its equipped with ADT and Slomins Shield security systems and it took the police about three hours to show up on each occasion. I lived in Parsippany before moving to Livingston and if you call the police or an alarm gets triggered they are there in about 10-15 minutes. Try to go to a Newark police station to get a report and you'll find out you have to pay for it even though its your first police report. The police show up when they feel like it after your place has been broken into and they ask you if you want them to write a report right away or do you want them to come back another time when you figure out everything thats missing or has been stolen..c'mon now. Yes I do not live there because its a place I will not spend my hard earned money if other places will treat my like a human being why should I go live somewhere and be treated like trash. Newark is a shyte hole has been and from my experience will always be unless I see REAL changes. Just my $0.02 ... !!! |
