I have had a job offer with the federal government in NEw York. I moved from Jersey to Florida a year ago. If I accept the offer I would like to go back, but when I lived in Jersey it was in the South area. I don't know much about North Jersey or even how to take the train to New york. I need to find a place asap. What do you recommend??

Think of it as a huge upheaval. In the past, climatic change was dramatic but not within such a short time. Ours has been hastened by everything that has been admitted to the atmospheric mix.

When it all settles, then the rise in temperature will become a permanent fixture. It has been thought that people who live in Winnepeg, for instance, will have a climate matching that of South Carolina. It will not happen all at once.

Here in NJ we have experienced some of the worst storms in my memory. Not so much precipitation as extremely damaging winds and flooding. This is the hallmark of climate change. The storms will continue to worsen in intensity.

Which is why I remarked that NJ might be entirely different in the future. One has to stand back and look at the larger picture rather then a yearly basis.

Hope this helps....I resent being called a kook when pictures of the ice caps taken within the last 10 years has proven beyond a doubt we are in for a huge change. Best to check what you are not being told as opposed to those who for one reason or another don't want the truth to come out.

seems to me global warming has been going on forever.....we could still be in the ice age. We may be speeding things up, I don't really know, but global warming is how the ice age ended it would seem.

hey, maybe when everyone ends up fleeing, and nature reclaims NJ, we will have a chance to afford to become become "reverse snowbirds" (or sunbirds??!) and build our vacation homes here...in the Watchung Mountains...in the wilds of what was once Wildwood...on the great plains of western nj! haha!

Yes, I absolutely would. I miss southern NJ terribly (from Camden County down to Cape May County).

Why do you guys move to North Carolina when Virginia is so much more varied than NC and its a much nicer state? Low property taxes, etc here in the western part of VA like NC, much more expensive in northern part near DC. I have never understood why so many tri-state NYC area residents think NC is the "promised land". I lived in the NYC area briefly and I met so many people who were planning to move to NC to avoid the high prices. Plus, we are much closer to home. I am noticing a lot of ex-tri staters who left for Florida years ago are leaving there and moving UP to NC. Now, NC is beginning to look like over crowded Florida. By the way, Roanoke is only 45 miles from NC!!

My husband and I hope to be moved to the Roanoke area by October. He got notice that he was hired by a hospital there about 3 weeks ago and we are slowing closely down here in NJ and getting ready for the plunge.

I too will miss South Jersey immensely. It is nothing like North Jersey. In fact, South Jersey tried twice to split off and become a separate state, but of course Trenton doesn't want to see its precious Atlantic City casinos go.

Although it is being built up at a huge rate, if you have the $$$ you can still find a nice and relatively rural home and be just minutes from major highways, shopping centers etc. But that's the key: $$$ If you can afford the house, you can't afford the taxes!

My husband was extremely impressed by Roanoke when he went for interviews. He said he could feel it was a city on a mission--to expand and become vibrant yet still manage to fit in its natural niche, surrounded by the beautiful mountains. Just to mention a difference between Roanoke and NJ: Roanoke is still tree-lined and even the mall is surrounded by greenery. In NJ, there is really no desire or need, apparently, to feel like Nature is still around. The theory here is to destroy anything that grows, pave it over, and put up more ratables.

We hope to live just far enough outside Roanoake to enjoy the country yet be able to go to the city within a reasonable time. I understand that's not hard to do there. Best of both worlds, in other words.

North Carolina did not come out all that well in my research. Huge influx of immigrants and the resultant strain on resources. Crime is up as well. And somehow, Virginia strikes me as a state very mindful of its history, more so then average. As a historian, that pleases me a great deal. And should anyone really feel the urge, Washington DC is a doable trip, though I don't feel the urge at this point in time.

I will always be a Jersey Girl. But it has priced itself away from us, sadly. Who knows, if a miracle happens and we become rich, we might move back, but I'm afraid by that time NJ would be unrecognizable. I love my state, but it doesn't love me back.

although I only quoted the very poignant last paragraph, that was a truly excellent, honest, well-thought-out, and beautifully written post.
I concur 100%. That last line says it all!

Thank you! I do have very strong feelings about what we are doing. Essentially, we were forced into moving. I will miss my relatives very much. But if we stay, we will go broke or else keep living our lives worrying about every penny we spend.

A lot of us here are in exactly the same boat. And it's actually nice to know that we're not alone. I've loved it here...but it hasn't loved us back! I'll miss friends here, but I view that situation like this...who doesn't want to head out of Jersey for a long weekend to visit folks somewhere really nice?!
