How is a high sales tax a good thing? That hits everyone, particularly those who can least afford it.

I didn't say it was a good thing but the good balances that off. My real Estate tax on a 4500sq ft house is $3500 a yr. In NJ maybe $20,000 on that.
No State taxes taken off pay check, covers the sales tx.
Also, we do have tax free holidays, where everyone runs and buys clothes, shoes, computers.

I never think I would say this but I made a huge mistake by coming back to NJ.

We moved from NJ to Fl and then back to NJ because of career advancement.

We never had anything to compare NJ to but after ten years in Florida, here is what we view as the personal differences for our family:

[1] Economical.
My income has increased and my families buying power has decreased.
[2] Work life in-balance.
[3] Religious bigotry.
Surprising, I too thought this would be the reverse.
To properly express ones Christian faith, is viewed upon as a negative.
No bible thumping here but just the simple act of praying as a family before a meal
has been very interesting.

Still NJ does offer a higher standard of public education. The elementary to high school education is far superior to Florida.

Bottom line – For our family - NJ is a great place to educate your family but for overall quality of life, NJ only offers superficial benefit and no long term growth.

I was so happy to move to NC because of the lower cost of living. I knew people who had moved to NC and didn't come back to NJ. When I transferred to my NC office and got to know my co-workers, I was surprised to learn how many of them worked two jobs. Yep, the housing and insurance costs are significantly lower, but so are the salaries. NC takes out a lot of state taxes (almost twice as what NJ did). I also suggest you have a job lined up when you come down here. Approximately 6500 transplants per month are moving to the Charlotte area for many of the same reasons you have in your post. People will be fighting for every crumb of decent work. I wish you luck with whatever you decide.
My husband has a job in Texas, same pay as here, at least 50% less living costs. We can't wait to go.

And of course, anyone who is about to leave would look at a thread about "why did you come back" which is why I posted.

We moved to SC I would move back to NJ in a heart beat - my husband loves it here. It isn't that I hate it, but NJ will always be home.

I lived in NYC for 23 years, Fair Lawn, NJ for 17. Now I am in Tampa, FL. and wish we could afford to move back!

Tampa is devoid of culture, tolerance, diversity, education, manners, intelligence, good drivers, etc. If you go into the country just outside of Tampa, it is MUCH worse!

As others have said, if NJ wasn't so expensive to live, we would be moving back.

I know people from NY/NJ who absolutely LOVE it down here and would never leave. I mostly know people from NY/NJ who HATE it here and would leave in a second if they could.

If you are thinking of moving out, I would strongly recommend renting first. Don't sell your house (if you own one) in case you want to come back. We cannot afford the house we sold 4 years ago.

Florida is such a dump!! Anyone leaving Jersey or NY for there will get a flat, hot-humid (STUPID PEOPLE) 3rd world hell full of strip malls and chain restaurants. Floridians are flocking back to NY and New Jersey or coming half way back and settling in the Carolinas.
