My husband and I just moved here a little more than a year ago and would like to meet some new friends. We are both originally from the Midwest and currently don't have kids. We are two young professionals who are pretty laid back and un-pretentious. More about us- we have a dog that we adore and enjoy taking for walks and hikes, like outdoor activities, jazz, artsy-type events. Love visiting Farmer Markets, as well as travelling to both NYC and Philly.
We wish there were more coffeehouses around the South Jersey area. So far the only place that we really enjoy hanging out at is Borders Books in Mays Landing. We're looking for a gathering place- sports bars, restaurants, etc. where we can find folks with common interests. Galloway is a place that we have visited that we enjoy. Right now we live in Mays Landing. We love Mays Landing, but there just doesn't seem to be too many places around here for a couple like us to hang out. We love the landscape and weather here but are not into the biker or beach scenes.
I have to say that I don't know a thing about Mays Landing except that, by NJ standards, it's in the middle of nowhere.
I feel bad for you because the neat beach towns to check out are excessively touristy in that part of the state and the small towns inland are probably about 15-20 years away from becoming hip.
That said, Millville, which shouldn't be that far from you, has a happening, little downtown.
Otherwise all the action is going to be an hour drive or more.

Thank you for any suggestions!
You're not in the best area for mingling with 30 somethings. Come to Moorestown, we have a Starbucks on Main Street with outside seating, go also to Princeton, Haddonfield or Collingswood.

Agreed. You need to head to or move near Philadelphia. There is a LOT more going on here.
Thanks so much everyone for your suggestions, I really appreciate it. My husband's job is near here, so we settled in Mays Landing, which is a beautiful and friendly town. I'm doing the job search myself, hasn't been that easy finding a job here, hopefully when I do we'll meet more people. I guess we may have to reach out more and maybe even do some travelling to meet friends. I'll keep in mind all the places everyone mentioned as places to visit.
Yes, I totally agree, church IS a great place to meet people, only thing is my husband and I are not the same denomination. He's Catholic and I feel more comfortable in community churches that welcome all faiths. ( I was not raised in a "traditional" religion)
I don't have a problem going to the Catholic church with him (when we do go) but unfortunately he does not want to go to community churches so I may have to go to them by myself. I guess that's understandable, it would be taking away from his own faith which he was born into and raised with.
Hopefully we can find more activities around here where we can meet people, maybe volunteer at an animal shelter or something. If you have more suggestions, or places folks like us can hang out in Atlantic County, would love to hear them.

Don't be discouraged, meeting new people can be tough. But I think you should look beyond Atlantic County, the farther west you go towards Philly the more you're going to run into. I guess you could always go to AC but you never know what you'll find there. Go to a Comedy Club, plenty of bars and restaurants - try the Borgata.
I'll give a thumbs up to all of the other towns that were mentioned. Lots of great towns in NJ, just not so much where you live.
