It would be interesting to do an analyis of people's reasons for liking New Jersey. Personally, I think it tends to be clouded by nostalgia (because they grew up there). Nostalgia about businesses that used to exist there, etc. mean little to those who might be thinking of moving there.
Taken objectively, I'm not sure the state has that much to offer.
It's not the worst state to live in, but there are many that are far better.
Nothing wrong with a little nostalgia. This thread is about the people not the state. Yes that is a little silly. It deals in stereotypes. But there are lots of threads like that on here. I just wanted to add that I have known some native Floridians and they have so very much to offer.
OK fine--I don't know if you hold the same views as the other person who posted or not. I found it strange that someone else would claim that people are insular and cliquish in another place, and that Jersey people are not. If that's true why is a gigantic thread like this needed to explain Jersey behavior and that they're really "not rude"--they just act that way??? If there wasn't a grain of truth in the stereotype, this thread wouldn't be here.

I don't agree. There are many threads here that go on and on and have no real significance. As far as rudeness goes- I mean what does rude mean to you? To some people it just means direct. There is a grain of truth to many of these things. The real point is why do you view these things as negatives? Difference is not always a bad thing.
In all fairness, I think they act this way because its such a high stress, unpleasant place to live. People are shaped by their environment.

It depends really. I think the type of family you are raised in has a lot to do with it. It is not just environmental. As far as people being insular- that varies from community to community not really from state to state. We are generalizing and taking liberties on here. LOL.
Everyone values different things and what one person finds glorious in the rural south- someone like myself has zero interest in. That does not mean I am being critical of people there or their life style. It is more of a question of different strokes. The people I grew up with frequently came from different backgrounds than me. That makes a difference also. You can only generalize so much but this is just for fun.
Lots of the things mentioned on this thread are very hard or impossible for me to relate to because I grew up more suburban and it is very different. Many of the posters here remind me of my mother and her generation of friends. She grew up in urban Boston but the types of things discussed here sound word for word the same as I heard from her.
I have noticed a poster mentioning growing up in a violent type environment. I did not experience that at all growing up. You can just be unlucky. I was lucky to grow up in a world where someone could feel insulted but never dream of putting their hands on you. I think if you grow up like that it is very hard to get any perspective on the world at large. You just grow up in fear and survival mode. That is more common today in urban areas but not limited to NJ or northeastern cities.
