It is one opinion. Take it as that. I have a friend who just moved out of Elizabeth because she could not take the crime anymore. I can not tell you how many friends of hers were MURDERED. Yeah, killed. She's only 26 and 4 of her classmates were killed. (1 was in another town, but close by... the 3 others were in Elizabeth.) Not the odds I'd like to take.

Agreed, take it at that. My wife's family left Elizabeth when she was 2 and they never for a second regret that decision.
I have in-laws that live in Linden and I have heard stories of homes around them getting burglarized as well as having their 80 year old grandmother mugged on the street a block from their house.

The stats at in the earlier pages of this thread are from the UCR. Bear in mind, almost HALF of crime, violent particularly, goes unreported. Irvington is horrendous. Paterson, forget it. I wouldn't live in these towns or even close. I worked in Newark for years with people from all of these towns and have never heard anything good about them.
I was running out of gas one day and went into Irvington, was waiting at a light to turn and my vehicle was approached by about 10 guys who were looking in my windows and walking around me. Believe me, it was creepy. I went into work the next day and told a couple of my co-workers what happened and they said that the guys probably thought I was there for drugs, and then when I didn't roll down the window, they figured they would window shop and see what they could get.
I, too, feel very sorry for those that live there and can't get out for one reason or other. There are some nice people from all of these places, but they are few and far between in my experience.

I completely agree. Most "bad" areas have a lot of good people who are poor and may not be able to live elsewhere. Sadly a few bad folks make it a living hell for them.

I live in Jersey City because that is where I chose to live. Yes it has issues but there are some great things about it as well.
Why is it so difficult for some people on this forum to understand that there are some people who want to live in these areas and don't just live there because they can't afford to live anyplace else???

Agreed. I live in Downtown Jersey City. Check the average price per square foot in zip code 07302 versus the average price per square foot in any of your typical nice suburban towns. (Hint, JC's is higher)
It is VERY expensive to live in Downtown JC...there are not many poor people there at all.
