Default Selling car in NJ

Once you sell your car to someone, do you need to take the license plates with you or let the new owner keep until they register? Do you need to notify DMV? If they are taken then how will the person drive home? Surely the police would stop them.

The buyer must obtain license plates when he registers the vehicle at DMV. Usually the buyer will purchase the car from you as they need the title in order to register. You should immediately remove your license plates and keep in your possession until you can return them (at the end of the MV inspection line). Stolen license plates can be used in crimes.

As far as the person driving home, possibly you would drive the vehicle to their residence and then remove your plates or the person would take the title to DMV and obtain plates before removing from your residence.

The person needs to obtain plates or meet you at DMV to transfer title and you take your plates off and turn them in. Other option is to drop car off for them, take plates and get a ride home. Or take plates off when person comes to get car, that way they'll have to have plates to drive away. Don't let anyone "borrow" your plates. They'll take a joy ride through the E-Z pass lanes, and you'll end up paying!

Its my experience that you have to turn them in to your insurance agent to have that car removed from your policy.
