Pre-Requirement to Lap Band Surgery ???
I am currently researching my options and I am looking to find out what the pre-requirements are prior to being approved for the Lap Band Surgery.
I have already tried everything from Curves, Weight watchers, Lucille Roberts, over the counter pill help, prescription help and have yo-yo dieted for the last 20 years. I have finally hit 40 and it seems as if the whole world gave me all their weight in a matter of months...
I'm tired of eating right and not losing more than 4 pounds. I'm tired of excerizing 30 minutes a day and nothing budging. The only time I lost a significant amount of weight was when I tried the Phentermine and worked out endlessly daily. 6 miles of walking a day and hitting the gym 4 times a week. I LIVED to work out and even then I only dropped about 35 lbs....go figure. I have been naturally "thick" LOL, just about all my life. So here I am, at the end of struggle that I do not wish to participate in any longer. I still eat right and walk daily but I just keep gaining. Hence, the research into the Lap Band.
When they came out with Gastric bypass, I lost a few friends and said I would never resort to that. However, since then they came out with lap band which non invasive surgery and has pretty much gotten some great reviews with very little cons to the surgery.
SO now I am asking the residents of NJ to assist me in my research. If anyone has had this lap band surgery here in NJ, please let me pick your brain. Especially if you work for the state of NJ

Losing weight is probably the most frustrating thing in life. I lost 45lbs over a few months when i adopted a vegetarian diet, which i have been on for 6 years. I am male 5foot 7 and i am 140lbs. I was 185lbs which was overweight. Now i pretty much eat and not worry about counting calories and that sort of thing. I eat lots of fruits, veggies and other healthy foods. I am sure this all sounds familiar to you. Some peoples genes make it harder to lose weight than other people, doesnt mean its impossible though. Exactly how tall are you and how much do you weigh? How much do you want to lose? I know you are at the end of your rope but there is alot to consider before surgery. Surgery is drastic and your life wont be the same. You may lose alot of weight but there are alot of side effects.

I believe the LapBand is usually only recommended if you're grossly overweight- like 300 lbs+. You didn't mention where you're starting from, so it's hard to say if it's the right choice for you. We have friends down here in GA who both (husband and wife) had gastric bypass surgery and it's worked great for them (they cut around 150 lbs each), but they also were morbidly obese.

Other forums
First let me say that I totally feel for you. This is one tough battle and it sound like you are a fighter. If you are a internet junkie (like me) then have you tried other forums? Check out the Health/Fitness/Weight loss area of City Data but also Google the web for other forums dedicated to Lap band discussions. I'd be interested in hearing about it too. And from what I recall for the TV AD for lap band, it did NOT say you had to be 300 lbs overweight LOL .... More like 100 lbs.
I'm no slim pickens, but hell, I'd consider stuffing my face and melting my gym card in a fondue pot just to gain the extra weight to qualify me !!! LOL
And while I'm at it, I'd get that Face lift thats non-surgical too !! With my luck, one hard sneeze and I'd snap my face straps as well as my bladder band. I could **** myself and get a triple chin at the same time.

I happen to know someone in Little Egg HArbor that had it. She wasn't grossly overweight. She was just short and I never considered her obese. She looks great now! I have seen lots of pictures. She is a friend I have cruised with. She felt a little uncomfortable after surgury but was ok.
There is also a new lap band that is supposed to be better.
I also have a client that has had the gastric bypass and she had no problems.

I know one person who's had the lap band and has had some difficulty - unfortunately I don't know the specifics, a lot of nausea and general malaise, but I don't know why.
My BF died from gastric bypass, so I understand where you're coming from there. Good luck.

Pre-Requirement for lapband
Thanks for all your input. Since I'm not 300+ overweight I am not eligible for Gastric bypass, and I seriously doubt I would try that anyway. I'm a short woman 5'2 and 220 (the heaviest I've ever ever been). I'm just about 100lbs overweight, and a BMI of 40. So I know I'm at the eligibility mark. Since the Lap Band is a non invasive surgery it is a lot safer and a lot of people I have been talking with didnt contend with a lot of side effects. The most damning (or most common) is eating too much and getting sick. I've tried all the internet options (forums) as well as ediets, ww, sparkle. It just doesn't move anywhere. Now that I hit 40 it sticks to the ribs even more...hehe, if thats even possible. I written down everything, I've coded everything and spent major bucks on foods and gyms, its nuts, its controls everything I do. I'm tired. So..yeah maybe surgery isn't the answer for everyone and maybe it wont be for me once I go to the docs next week for further information, but if its, I guess I'll be on way. So, if anyone has gone through it, I'd appreciate what u have to say.
