I think a nice letter stating how much you appreciated his/her hardwork and attitude would be enough. That's something they can use in their portfolio to get new customers. I can't think of a better gift than that (aside from Herpes, which is the gift that keeps on giving).

You hit the nail on the proverbial head! We moved from NJ to NC--same deal--never a word from either realtor-our's or buyer's-in fact they both gave us major grief.
On the other hand, our realtor here in NC thanked us verbally and gifted us with a magazine subscription to "Our State"--which I absolutely love, as a newcomer.
I bought a house and the realtor gave US a $200 gift certificate to a local restaurant. Her gift was the $9,400 check she walked out of my lawyers office with as she was the owner and broker of her firm.
I am a Realtor, and I think that is very thoughtful, for you to consider a gift.
FYI - Realtors do not receive the whole commission, they have to split the commission with their Broker. Some Realtors get as low as, 50% commission. Plus all the fees with being a Realtor, is very expensive. Yes, this is our job to serve and protect our clients. Everyone likes to be appreciated, in any form, a thank you card, works just as well, as a gift.
I am sorry for any bad experiences. In every profession, there are people who go above and beyond, and some who only see $ signs. Shop around and find a Realtor, who meets your needs. I too, had a bad experience, and that is why I became a Realtor, to help people.
I hope you find my post helpful.
