Don't know if you'd consider it central, but I thought this was a really romantic place!

I think Ryland Inn in Whitehouse Station went out of business a few months ago.

Default central NJ?

How about a 1/4 mile west of west central Nj?

Cross the bridge in Lambertville, go left at the light 2 blocks and visit Martine's on your left.

Lot of other choices up and down the road on that side of the river. Ancient houses with walk in fireplaces and 2 foot thick window sills. Works for me.

Ryland was overpriced and now out of business.

Are they out of business or closed for renovations? Their website says "temporarily closed for renovations".

I don't know what you'd consider romantic, but you may be thinking about something that's nicely decorated, not brightly lit, white tablecloths, quiet, with excellent food, service, and a good wine selection.

If so, there aren't that many that fit the bill perfectly in "central" NJ (wherever that is, exactly).

Is this a special occasion? Did you have a particular cuisine in mind? Is price a consideration? (If you want romance, who cares what it costs?)
The answers would help, though.

Of some those mentioned:

David Drake's -- Very good food, but it's way overpriced (especially for its location), and the wait staff is far below the standards one would expect from the pricing.

Aliperti's -- another Italian restaurant...there's one every thirty feet in NJ... I think they're better at catering, frankly, but the atmosphere isn't bad.

Ryland Inn -- I didn't know they went out of business...well, they were very good, but very pricey, and I guess it caught up to them.

Some other suggestions:

If you must have Italian (you can't escape them, LOL) then you might consider Tosca in Kenilworth (sit in the "wine room"), but even better for a romantic dinner would probably be La Catena in Roselle Park. Of the two, the latter is more expensive, yet both offer a more diverse menu than the usual Italian fare (they are not gloppy-red-sauce restaurants).

For French cuisine, you have few choices, but you only need one -- Chez Catherine in Westfield. It is a little more brightly lit than some, but the food and service are excellent. The tasting menu is wonderful (have it with wine). Finish your meal with a nice Armagnac. (Insist on Stephane as your server...he's the Maitre d'hotel.

Another choice in Westfield, if you like a good steak, is Sweetwater Steakhouse. A little overpriced, but the ambiance is good. Have the filet mignon.

I think your best bet might be Restaurant Seranade in Chatham. The cuisine is french-inspired, the service is very good, and the ambiance very nice. They often have some interesting tasting menus as well.

Best of luck!
