Depression era food -
to rival wiley's old post... what your parents served when on a "budget."
LETS DO DEPRESSION ERA FOOD....
Here is GRANDMA'S pea soup recipe.....
Ingredients:
1 Pound Split Peas * 2 quarts water * 1 ham bone with meat (this may have to be ommitted for depression era...) * One chopped onion * 1/4 teaspoon garlic powder * 1/4 teaspoon thyme * 1 Cup Choped Celery * 1 cup chopped carrot * Salt & Pepper to taste
Place dried peas and 2 quarts of water in a large saucepan. Place on stove and bring split peas to a boil. Boil on low heat for for 2 minutes then remove from stove and soak peas in water for 2 hours. Add ham bone, chopped onion, garlic powder, thyme, and a dash of pepper. Return to stove and bring soup to a boil; cover, reduce heat, and simmer for 2 hours. Stir occasionally. Remove meat from bone; dice and return to pea soup along with chopped celery and carrot. Let pea soup simmer slowly for 45 minutes, again stirring occasionally. Taste split pea soup and add salt or pepper to taste.
Serve with warm croutons.

Reminds me of my favorite joke we use to do to eachother as a kid - you made them answer with pea green soup as you asked them:
What did you have for breakfast? - pea green soup
What did you have for lunch? - pea green soup
what did you have for dinner? - pea green soup
what did you do in your sleep? - pea green soup
LOL..the stuff that made us giggle as kids : ))))
