I am moving to NJ and will be working near Times Square, NY.

I am getting a 1 BR apartment in Hammel Gardens (Maybrook Drive, Maywood) for $1025, but could not find any reviews about these apartments over internet.

Also I am not sure how safe is Maybrook Drive for a couple with newborn baby. My wife is a homemaker.

The other option I have is to pay around $1400 for a 1 BR apartment in a large complex on Prospect Avenue which I feel is more secured, but I need to stretch my budget for this apartment.

Could someone let me know about the Hammel Garden apartments and safety in that area. Is it safe if I have to walk on Essex Street late night while coming back from work.

Thanks

maywood is making a comeback in my opinion and a very nice old charm town. Funny it used to get a bad rap being close to highways and Hackensack, now all those things are what people want!! Old charm, good library, totally safe, I would enjoy the town and the little main street is definately coming into its own! I think its a good choice. This town is a family town, and very little crime. As far as apartments, I do not know where that is but I am sure Maywood is safe and secure for you !!! Stick with your gut instinct its nice! I worked right off essex street and drove late nights all the time totally safe. Hospital is right up the road, its a main drag, tons of cops you will be FINE, especially the Maywood side. Even Hackensack is fine that side of Essex, I have been around RR ave and Essex and never felt in danger at all. Essex is safe .

I stay in Maybrook Garden Apartments that is close to Hammel Garden. I think Maybrook Garden Apartment is one of the worst and poorly maintained apartment with flimsy walls and poor floors and you can hear normal people walking, through the walls. Some times it is annoying. Better check the age of the building. If it is an aged building don't go for it. Pay 200 or 300 more for a peaceful life. I made that mistake and I'm suffering now. When I was living as a single person in the apartment it was fine. Now I have a family with a one year old kid. The tenant who stays on top of my apartment is so ruthless and doesn't understand this. For her, our normal living noises are causing trouble and she stomps and Bangs the floor like any thing early in the morning, if we simply walk in our roms during night times. If you single.. go fot it. I don't recommend these kind of apartments for familiy living. I'm just waiting for my lease to get over.
